York County and Chester County are set to honor troops killed in action in wars at events Sunday and Monday over Memorial Day weekend.

▪ The annual York County Memorial Day weekend ceremony begins at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Lakeview Memory Gardens, 1774 U.S. 321, York. The cemetery is where the monument with all the names of York County troops killed in action in wars is located. In all, 212 troops from York County were killed in action from World War I through the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The event is coordinated by the York County Veterans Advisory Board. The program includes speakers and honors Gold Star Mothers whose children were killed in action. Special speaker is Dr. Perry Hopkins of Clover, a decorated combat pilot who was shot down four times in wartime.

Music will be provided by the Filbert Strings, Bobby Plair Sr. and Jr., and others.

The event is free and open to the public and the veterans board encourages any veteran or person who supports the military to attend.

▪ Chester County’s annual Memorial Day ceremony is Monday at 11 a.m in front of the Chester County War Memorial building, 154 Main St. Chester. The event will include Chester High School JROTC, wreaths for each war’s monument, and speakers.

▪ Historic Brattonsville will be open to the public to honor all United States veterans on Memorial Day. Games will be played on the lawn, picnic baskets are welcome, and the 800-acre plantation with interpretive battlefield trail will be open for exploration.
