Fuel spill cleanup underway in western York County
Crews are working to upright a tractor trailer that wrecked near Sharon Tuesday morning, spilling some diesel from its fuel tank.
The wreck happened about 7 a.m. on the 6000 block of Lockhart Road, according to Chuck Haynes, director of York County Emergency Management. The tractor trailer left the roadway and overturned, causing one of the truck’s fuel tanks to rupture.
“Until we get the truck upright, we don’t know for sure how much fuel has been lost,” Haynes said, adding that it is likely less than 100 gallons.
There are creeks and waterways nearby, but Haynes said crews are keeping the leak contained.
It will likely take a few hours to get the truck upright and the spill cleaned up, Haynes said. Motorists are urged to avoid the 6000 block of Lockhart Road and use detours on McConnells Highway or S.C. 97.
The S.C. Highway Patrol will be investigating the crash.
