Doughnut-eating York Co. cops, firefighters, EMTs to raise money for Special Olympics

Cops and doughnuts will come together for a good cause this week.

York County police officers, along with firefighters and first responders, will be holding their third-annual fundraiser for the Special Olympics at Krispy Kreme, 1525 Celanese Road, Rock Hill.

The fundraising gets underway Friday – which happens to be National Doughnut Day – with two doughnut-eating contests; one at 9 a.m. featuring local celebrities (including Herald reporters), and another at 2 p.m. with emergency responders from different agencies competing against each other.

“All the money goes straight to Special Olympics athletes and their families,” said Rock Hill Police Detective Phil Tripp.

Money raised will help pay the travel expenses for athletes competing in the Special Olympics like Clover golfer Scott Rohrer, who in the past two years has medaled in the national summer games in Los Angeles and the world golf tournament in Denmark.

On Saturday, police officers will stand on the roof of Krispy Kreme all day to raise money for Special Olympics, including another doughnut-eating contest at 2 p.m. – this one open to the public.

“That could be anybody; high school students, college students,” Tripp said. “You just have to pay a $20 entry fee.”
