Troopers: Lancaster 7-year-old killed after box truck hits scooter

A 7-year-old boy was killed after being hit by a truck while riding a scooter in Lancaster County late Monday evening, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The collision happened about 6:20 p.m. on Morningside Drive near China Berry Drive about 2 miles south of Lancaster, according to Lance Cpl. Gary Miller of the Highway Patrol. Nija Tinsley Jr., 7, was riding an electric scooter south on a private drive and entered Morningside Drive, where the scooter was struck by a westbound Freightliner box truck.

Tinsley was not wearing a helmet and was taken by EMS to Springs Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Miller said.

No charges have been filed, and the collision remains under investigation. This is the second fatal crash in Lancaster County in less than three days. Two people were killed in a five-car crash in Indian Land on Saturday.
