A new, 750,000-gallon water tank to replace the circa-1939 tank at Main and Laurel streets near downtown Rock Hill was lifted into place on Friday.

The tank replacement is part of a roughly $4 million project that includes landscaping and other improvements at the oldest of Rock Hill’s four water tank sites.

Scott Turner, water and wastewater superintendent for the city of Rock Hill, said the new tank should be ready to fill with water and operate in September.

The old, 500,000-gallon water tank was removed last summer, Turner said. Since then, the site was graded and a concrete base was built for the new tank.

“We needed more (water) capacity in the Bleachery area development and downtown development,” Turner said. The old tank “had lived its life.”

He said landscaping and curb and gutter work to improve the appearance of the site will likely continue through October and November. “It’s cleaned up that whole corner,” he said. “It’s made it look a lot nicer.”
