SC man drowns in Broad River

A man has drowned in the Broad River in Cherokee County, just west of York County.

Coroner Dennis Fowler said in a news release that crews were called to a dam near Blacksburg around 9 p.m. Monday.

The body of Carl Owens Sr. of Gaffney was found shortly after 10 p.m.

Fowler said Owens had been fishing with his son when he fell down a steep embankment. The coroner says the man’s son was unable to get his father out of the water because of the swift current.

An autopsy was planned Tuesday.
