Roads, by any other name, would steer as straight.

But sometimes they need new names anyway.

York County planning work for July includes renaming of several roads due to new road construction. County staff recommends officially renaming Fort Mill Southern Bypass to Fort Mill Parkway, from Holbrook Road to S.C. 160. The county made the same move when an earlier phase of the bypass opened.

The latest phase opened at the end of June.

The new bypass splits several roads, one of which needs its own name change. The county recommends Hensley Road split into East Hensley Road and West Hensley Road. The realignment of Legion Road at the bypass has McKinney Road becoming part of Legion. The county doesn’t list a change for Williams Road, which also is split by the bypass.

County leaders say road name changes are important, particularly for emergency responders needing to know quickly which way to turn off a main highway. Doby’s Bridge Road became North Dobys Bridge and South Dobys Bridge when the bypass crossed it, for that reason.

Other news

▪ Two single-family subdivisions are in the discussion phase for Lake Wylie. The larger one involves property at S.C. 274 and Harper Davis Road. Planners met developers June 16 for that site. It sits just shy of 180 acres.

Marsh Realty Co. owns the site. It came up for rezoning more than a year ago, to allow for single-family homes.

County planners met on the other project June 9. That one runs the east side of Kingsburry Road. Brookshire Woods, LLC bought property there in 2009. The site includes more than 21 acres. The property is between S.C. 557 and S.C. 55.

▪ Staff met with developers June 30 on a proposed “non-residential subdivision” between U.S. 21 and I-77, near exit 90. The property is almost 20 acres. County records show Carowinds Point Crossing, LLC owns it, purchased in late 2007 for almost than $1.7 million.

▪ The Village at Ivy Ridge came up for final planning review. The almost 13-acre Lake Wylie project off S.C. 49 will have 78 townhomes. The property sits at the fork of Altamonte Drive and Cypress Glen Lane, between Robinwood Lane and Bonum Road. It is just east of the Hamiltons Bay community.

▪ Meritage Homes is looking to finalize Prescott Place, a 60-home community on almost 27 acres. The project sits off Regent Parkway, across from Pikeview Road and Madison Green Drive.

▪ Pine Moss Lake will bring 13 single-family homes on nine acres. The new subdivision is located on lakefront property off Pine Moss Lane, near Fawns Glen Place in the Montgomery Road area.

▪ May Green Properties is ready to develop 29 new homes on 88 acres in Lake Wylie. Phases two and three of Henry’s Glen sits north of Oakridge Road and west of Brandon Road. Lots will be at least an acre, and will average more than 2 acres. More than 9 acres will be open space.

▪ Lake Wylie Partners LLC owns almost five acres at 4581 Charlotte Highway. The property is up for rezoning from residential conservation to business development district. A public hearing is expected Aug. 15.

The property is next to River Hills, and another property owned by the applicant. Plans are to relocate an existing printing, labeling, marking and coding business less than 1,000 feet east on S.C. 49. A vacant home there would be demolished.
