Rock Hill starts one-year countdown to 2017 BMX World Championships

Rock Hill officials started the one-year countdown to next year’s UCI BMX World Championships at the city’s BMX Supercross Track, which organizers expect to be the largest international sporting event in state history.

City officials and others from the community partners also ceremonially raised the flag of the Union Cycliste Internationale at the BMX track.

The last time the UCI BMX World Championships were held in the U.S., USA in Louisville, KY in 2001.

More than 40 countries will be represented by some 3,300 riders, who will compete in front of about 20,000 fans July 25-30, 2017. Spectators will have the chance to see fierce competition among world-class amateur and elite athletes.

“We intend to roll out the red carpet for thousands of visitors from around the world in 2017 and show them the true meaning of ‘Southern hospitality,’ ” Rock Hill Mayor Doug Echols said.

“This is a unique opportunity for Rock Hill and the Carolinas to be on a global stage, and prove to the world that we are ready – not only for BMX, but for a variety of tourism and business opportunities.”

Rock Hill is also preparing to host the fourth of five events in the global series 2016 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. The World Cup features the best BMX riders in the world competing for points and the World Cup title.
