With hundreds of new students and their parents expected to flood the Winthrop University campus during Friday’s freshman move-in, police are urging motorists to use detours and expect some delays in areas around the campus.

Check-in will be from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday.

“All of our main campus is going to be affected,” said Lt. Wes Wiles of the Winthrop University Police Department, adding that the main campus extends from Oakland Avenue to Alumni Drive.

Those roadways will not be closed off but will be extremely congested, and Wiles says motorists not involved in move-in day are urged to avoid those two roadways.

“If they have business that takes them from Cherry Road down to downtown or vice-versa, we ask that they utilize Charlotte Avenue and Constitution Boulevard as their detour routes,” he said, adding that Cherry Road from Charlotte Avenue to Oakland Avenue will also experience some congestion.

Wiles said Winthrop officers will be out directing traffic going to and from the main campus Friday.
