The Shepherd’s Center of Rock Hill will host its spring session of Adventures in Learning Monday at Oakland Baptist Church, 1067 Oakland Ave. The program meets each Monday through May 18.
Adventures in Learning offers an opportunity for adults age 50 and older to try new skills, be creative, exercise, learn and socialize. First visit is free. Cost for six-week session is $20. Coffee is served 9:15-9:30 a.m. during registration.
After the opening assembly at 9:30 a.m., the first classes are 10-11 a.m. They include a lecture series on the Catawba River with speakers Hope Matthews, Riverkeeper Sam Perkins, Scott Anderson, Travis Blue, Tom Bell and Bill Meyer. Other morning sessions are art classes, creative writing and beyond beginner bridge. Homemade refreshments are served 11-11:15 a.m.
The second session includes meditation and relaxation techniques, exercise to music, a series on York County with leading experts, creative writing and beyond beginner bridge.
After classes, the Lunch Bunch has a Dutch treat meal at various Rock Hill restaurants.

Special events
▪ The Master Gardeners of York County will hold two annual events during Rock Hill’s annual Come-See-Me festival – the plant sale and home tour.
The annual plant sale will be 9 a.m.-3 p.m. April 25 and 1-4 p.m. April 26 at the Glencairn Garden Learning Center, 825 Edgemont Ave., Rock Hill. On sale will be hundreds of perennials, shrubs, seedling trees, vines, bulbs, herbs and vegetables, with most priced between $1-$5.
The plants are donated by members, who will be available to answer questions about planting, spacing and other gardening topics.
The 2015 MGYC Garden Tour, featuring five homes in the Shiland Hills neighborhood, will be from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on April 25, with a rain date April 26, from 1-4 p.m. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at any of the tour gardens or at the plant sale.
Featured gardens include: June and Dick Kay, 2643 Ashmore Court; Julia and Alan Nichols, 2518 Meredith Court; Kim and Mike Climer, 2646 Carrolwood Drive; Laura and Woody Livingston, 2658 Carrolwood Drive; and Russ and Doris McDonald, 1830 Overbrook Drive.
Proceeds from both events help fund organization projects.

▪ Celebrate National Bookmobile Day and get a look inside the York County Library Bookmobile 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2-6 p.m. Thursday at the York County Library in Rock Hill. Learn about the bookmobile and the outreach services provided throughout York County. Receive an official Bookmobile Day sticker, a treat, and a make-and-take papercraft bookmobile.
▪ National Volunteer Week is Sunday-Saturday and the American Red Cross is honoring its volunteers who give their time to help people in need. More than 300 people volunteer in York, Chester, Lancaster and Chesterfield counties.
Last year the Red Cross volunteers of the Northern S.C. Chapter provided food, shelter, and comfort to 150 local families who faced emergency situations. They trained 6,000 people in lifesaving skills and provided 375 services to military members, veterans, and their families. Volunteers across South Carolina hosted nearly 1,200 blood drives and gave over 118,000 blood and platelet donations.
▪ Family Trust Federal Credit Union and Shred It Document Management will provide free document shredding for the public from 9 a.m. to noon April 25 as part of Earth Day Birthday at the Museum of York County, Mount Gallant Road, Rock Hill.
Shredding will be provided for personal and business documents in trucks located at Mount Gallant Elementary School. Staples, rubber bands, folders, paper clips, etc., do not need to be removed before shredding. Destroyed documents will go directly to a paper recycling plant.
Earth Day Birthday will feature activities, games, a 4-H petting zoo, and more than 30 educational exhibits with hands-on environmental lessons.
▪ Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Anne Springs Close Greenway will host its annual Earth Day Celebration on Saturday offering free entry and activities for all ages from hiking and kayaking to horseback rides, in addition to new events.
One of the nation’s foremost folk musicians and storytellers, four-time Grammy award winner David Holt, accompanied by acoustic music star and Grammy nominee, Josh Goforth, will perform. Asheville, N.C.-based folk musician, Billy Jonas, who mixes conventional instruments with homemade creations, also will perform.
There will be a 5K race and the inaugural “Recycled Runway” competition. The competition will feature local students, clubs and individuals who will create a costume from recycled materials and compete for prizes. Other events include horse and wagon rides, canoeing, kayaking and cane-pole fishing, border collie demonstrations, guided nature and history hikes, kids zone, farm animals, geocaching, historic cabin interpretation and vendor exhibits.

▪ Rudy Mancke, a Palmetto State naturalist, will talk about his environmental career 6 p.m. Tuesday at Dinkins Auditorium at Winthrop University. The free event, sponsored by Friends of Dacus Library, is open to the public. The Spartanburg native is best known for his long-running and award-winning ETV series, “NatureScene.”
▪ York County veterans are invited to an open house, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday at the new American Legion, 524 Heckle Blvd., Rock Hill. Bring proof of service, honorable discharge, DD214 or active Military ID. Those younger than age 21 are not permitted in the Clubroom.
▪ York County churches are planning a multicultural, interdenominational Christian gathering, “Seeking God Together,” to pray for revival and spiritual awakening at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church fellowship hall, 1300 India Hook Road, Rock Hill.
Churches organizing the gathering, in addition to Westminster, are First Baptist, Mount Hebron Baptist, Neely’s Creek ARP, Rock Hill Bible Fellowship, York Baptist Association, St. Barnabas Anglican and Lake Wylie Lutheran.
Fundraisers
▪ Benefit dinner and singing for cancer patient Elaine Cheek will be April 25 at Sharon Baptist Church. The Riverside Boys sing at 5 p.m. Dinner served between 6-7:30 p.m. Plates: $10, adult; $4, ages 3-12; free, age 3 and younger. Menu: fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, slaw, dessert, bread and tea. Eat in or take out. Sausage biscuits and baked goods will be sold beginning at 8 a.m. at the Sharon Fire Department.
▪ Grits and Grace breakfast buffet will be 8-11 a.m. Saturday at Eastside Baptist Church, 318 N. Jones Ave., Rock Hill. Cost is $6, adult; $3 age 12 and younger.
▪ The Abolition Flagship of the Gamma Beta Phi Society, a Winthrop University honor society, will hold a car wash 2-7 p.m. Friday at Advance Auto Parts, 2166 Cherry Road, Rock Hill. Cost, $5.

▪ The Rock Hill Chapter of the South Carolina Writers Workshop is presenting the ninth annual Writers Intensive Workshop on April 25 at Grace Lutheran Church, 426 Oakland Ave.
This year’s theme is “Writers’ Secrets Uncovered.” Each participant can choose four of 24 sessions, a panel discussion and optional critiques. Sessions are presented for beginning writers through published authors and include many genres, poetry and illustration.
