City of Tega Cay postpones spring sports programming due to threat of coronavirus
Tega Cay has postponed its spring sports programming until April 12 — at least.
The city’s parks and recreation director, Joey Blethen, released the news in a statement on Friday, citing “an unprecedented response from the sport’s world to combat the spread of COVID-19.”
“We understand that some may see this decision as an overreaction, and it may well be, but the City of Tega Cay would rather error on the side of caution than throw caution to the wind,” the statement read. “As an organization, our primary focus is to protect the health and well-being of our participants. We feel like continuing to allow play given the current circumstances would go against everything we stand for as an organization.”
The decision includes all youth sports practices and games and adult sports games, and it comes in light of several decisions to cancel sports events around the world. The NBA suspended its season on Wednesday. The NCAA tournament was canceled on Thursday.
The decision also came by the recommendation by Little League International to suspend play, the release said.
The City of Tega Cay still aims to play the regular season in full, the release said.
“In order to accomplish this goal, we are currently exploring all options to make this possible, including and not limited to: playing on Sundays, forgoing an end of the season tournament, no rain make-ups and extending the season through June 6th,” the release said.
The full schedules plan to be sent out to families by Friday, March. 20.
