Your Memorial Day plans probably won’t be interrupted by rain, experts say.
The first holiday weekend of the summer will bring more typical weather to the Rock Hill area, forecasters say.
A stagnant pattern responsible for several days of heavy rain and scattered flooding is being replaced by more heat and fewer showers and storms.
Meteorologists say showers and thunderstorms could be numerous Friday afternoon and evening, but the rest of the holiday weekend will produce only scattered activity. Sunshine will be in more ample supply than the past several days, they add.
With daytime temperatures climbing well into the 80s and plenty of humidity, it will feel more than a little like summer this weekend.
While rainfall amounts varied by location, most of the Rock Hill area received 3-5 inches of precipitation this week from a low pressure system that sat for several days over Tennessee and Kentucky. Forecasters say that system is moving northeast, but a weak disturbance is expected to cross the region Friday, bringing another round of stormy weather.
“Thunderstorms will develop from the west this afternoon and evening,” says National Weather Service meteorologist Harry Gerapetritis.
He said lightning and heavy rain can be expected as the system passes, but Gerapetritis adds that there will be a chance of severe weather in a few of the storms.
“Damaging gusts to 60 mph will be possible in a few storms,” Gerapetritis adds.
Temperatures are expected to reach 80 degrees Friday, after several days of below-average conditions.
It’ll heat up even more for the weekend, with forecasters expecting highs Saturday and Sunday to reach the upper 80s. A shift in wind direction could lower temperatures a bit for Memorial Day, with highs around 80. But humid conditions are expected throughout the weekend.
Next week looks like more of the same. The Weather Service’s Andrew Kimball says 80s, humidity, and a chance of a few afternoon and evening storms will be in the forecast much of the week.
