Man found dead in Catawba River in York County identified; coroner, police probe cause
A man who was found dead late Friday in the Catawba River has been identified, officials said.
David Cerda, 23, of Rock Hill, was found deceased in the water, said York County Coroner Sabrina Gast.
An autopsy and toxicology tests are pending, Gast said.
The coroner’s office is still investigating the cause and manner of death, Gast said.
Emergency officials and law enforcement were called to the scene Friday evening near the Riverwalk area of Rock HIll east of U.S. 21 and Interstate 77, said Trent Faris, spokesman for the York County Sheriff’s Office. The area is near the 500 block of Herons Ferry Road.
A water rescue team and EMS worked to retrieve the body that was found floating in the river, Faris said.
Rock Hill police and fire departments were dispatched to the scene but the water in the river is under the jurisdiction of the sheriff’s office, said Mark Simmons, Rock Hill Fire Department deputy chief.
The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office and coroner’s officials.
