Man charged with punching, biting Rock Hill Police officers during struggle

Rock Hill police officers were bitten and punched in the face late Thursday as they tried to subdue a suspect, officials said.

James Henry Thompson II, 36, is now charged with two counts of felony assault on a police officer while resisting arrest, two counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, and disorderly conduct, according to court records and Lt. Michael Chavis of the Rock Hill Police Department.

Thompson was not hurt when he was being detained and taken into custody, Chavis said.

Police were called around 11 p.m. Thursday to a home on Doby Drive by a person who reported Thompson was being disorderly, according to Chavis and a Rock Hill police incident report. When the officers arrived at the house, Thompson ran at the person who called police. The officers tried to restrain Thompson, according to the incident report.

One female officer was bitten in the leg and arm while trying to subdue Thompson, Chavis said. That female officer and another female officer also were punched in the face several times, Chavis said.

The officers’ injuries are not expected to be serious, Chavis said.

Thompson remains in police custody pending a court bail hearing.
