York County man killed in fatal crash west of town of York, officials say

A York County man was killed Thursday morning in a highway crash discovered near a school outside York, officials said.

The man was identified as Daniel Callahan, 45, of York, said York County Coroner Sabrina Gast.

The accident was discovered around 7 a.m. on Sutton Spring Road off S.C. 5 west of York, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Master Trooper Gary Miller of the highway patrol said in a statement the crash happened before midnight Wednesday, Miller said.

Callahan was alone in the vehicle, Miller said.

The 2016 Jeep Callahn was driving went off the left side of Sutton Spring Road and overturned, Miller said. Callahan was ejected from the Jeep, Miller said.

The wreck was near Cotton Belt Elementary School.

York school district spokesman Tim Cooper said the crash did not involve anyone connected to the nearby school or school district.

The crash remains under investigation by the S.C. Department of Public Safety and the coroner’s office.
