‘Doing what we can’: Several York County groups to offer free Thanksgiving meals
Several churches and community organizations in and around York County have committed to assisting those in need during the Thanksgiving holiday.
While several local groups already have distributed supplies ahead of the holiday, others are preparing and serving meals across York, Lancaster and Chester counties on Thanksgiving Eve and Thanksgiving Day.
For those who need assistance this Thanksgiving, here’s a list of area organizations that are providing free meals.
Rock Hill Community Fridge
Where: 130 W. White St., Rock Hill
When: Nov. 24 at 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The 24/7 community fridge, located outside The Mercantile, will accept donated meal boxes this week to give out on Thanksgiving Eve.
The community fridge has asked the donated boxes, which should each feed a family of four, include two cans of corn, two cans of yams, two cans of green beans, a small precooked ham and a package of precooked rolls, according to its Facebook.
Rock Hill’s first-ever community fridge will hand out the meal boxes on Wednesday between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Feed the Hungry
Where: York, Lancaster and Chester counties
The local nonprofit is working to distribute hundreds of Thanksgiving meals throughout most of York County, and in Lancaster and Chester this holiday, Rev. Ronal King said.
This year, the nonprofit will not be giving out meals in Rock Hill because the local Walmart stores do not have enough turkeys, King said. Instead, Feed the Hungry will provide those in Rock Hill with $12 to buy a turkey on their own, King said.
“We’re just doing what we can do,” he said. “We’re dealing with the needy — not the greedy. We want to help those in need.”
Any family or individual without a Thanksgiving dinner, should call King at 803-417-3881, he said.
“All they have to do is call,” King said.
Clover Open Air Flea Market
Where: 406 Kings Mountain St., Clover
When: Nov. 24 at 12 p.m.
Due to COVID-19, the market will provide free Thanksgiving meals for its 11th year on to-go plates and by delivery. The flea market will begin serving at 12 p.m. on Thanksgiving Eve.
Anyone who needs a meal delivered can call David Bowles at 704-214-2605.
Those who want to donate can drop food and drinks off at the flea market before 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Those who want to volunteer can stop by the market or call Bowles.
St. Anne Catholic Church
Where: 1694 Bird St., Rock Hill
St. Anne’s will provide meals on Thanksgiving Day. Those who need a meal can call the church at 803-329-2662.
Those interested in volunteering can call the church or send an email to stannethanksgiving@gmail.com.
