Pete Stathopoulos, director of York County Fair for decades, dies at 94

Pete Stathopoulos, director of the York County Fair for decades, has died.

He was 94. Stathopoulos died Friday.

He was director of the fair for more than 30 years, and gave the fair more than five decades of service as a volunteer. He served director and treasurer until the fair closed in 2007.

The last day of the annual fair was “Pete Stathopoulos Day.”

Stathopoulos, a World War II military veteran and American Legion member, was honored by the S.C. General Assembly and Rock Hill City Council in 2007 for his service to the community through the fair.

The fair was held each fall in Rock Hill near Winthrop University on property across Constitution Boulevard from District III Stadium. The fair closed after 85 years of operation when the property was sold.

The fair annually brought visitors from all over South Carolina and the region for rides and attractions, agricultural contests, animal exhibits, cooking and baking. Stathopoulos instituted special days at the fair for people with disabilities, seniors, and children.

Stathopoulos’ funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at India Hook United Methodist Church.
