York football coaching legend and SC hall of famer Bill Pate dies at 88
William “Bill” Pate, former legendary football coach at York Comprehensive High School, has died.
Pate died on Christmas Eve at age 88.
Pate, who also coached at Lake View and Timmonsville in a career that stretched across almost four decades, is a member of the South Carolina Football Coaches Hall of Fame.
Pate coached the York Cougars to the school’s only modern era South Carolina state football championship in 1986, said Bobby Carroll, another former York coach and York native whose brothers played for Pate at York.
“In York, many still say ‘Coach Pate’ when they are talking about football,” Carroll said. “He resurrected York football and was the coach at the the school for its only state title in the modern era. He was known as a hard-nosed coach who still is remembered and loved by the fans and people of York.”
