After a winter storm caused area schools to cancel in-person classes Tuesday, another storm is predicted to roll in Friday.

According to weather correspondent Steve Lyttle, the forecast shows the possibility snow, sleet and freezing rain on at least parts of the Rock Hill region. And it will come amid the coldest predicted temperatures of the winter.

The National Weather Service also has issued a winter storm watch for Chester and Lancaster counties.

In preparation for these conditions, many area schools are transitioning to e-Learning on Friday.

Here are the plans for the districts that currently have reported their plans.

Check back for updates on this developing story.

Rock Hill

In an email to parents Thursday evening, Rock Hill Schools announced it will have an eLearning day. The email said district and school facilities are closed, including for activities and sports practice.

“The possibility of icy roads is concerning for us in getting buses to the schools in the morning but then also getting them home safely later in the day as temperatures will not rise above freezing,” the district wrote. “Wet pavement combined with freezing temperatures can create dangerous conditions for our buses, student drivers, faculty and staff.”

The email advised parents: Students in grades K-12 will have access to digital materials through Canvas and Seesaw and can access those sites through Launchpad. Assignments will be posted in Canvas and Seesaw by 9 a.m. Friday morning. Pre-K students have eLearning packets in their backpacks.

Students will be assumed present and given five days to complete their work, in case they lose power or access to the internet.

The district says elementary teachers will be available to help with questions from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. High schools and middle schools will communicate their individual office hours to parents.

Fort Mill

Fort Mill will transition to eLearning.

According to a district statement, schools have adjusted because of “the possibility of ice on the roadways overnight and a wintry mix tomorrow afternoon could cause unsafe traveling conditions for our buses and cars throughout the day.”

All schools and district facilities will be closed and all after school activities and programs are canceled.

Teachers and schools have plans for eLearning and will communicate more information about the instructional day, the statement said.

Lancaster

Lancaster County School District is also converting to eLearning.

“Please look for more information from your child’s school and individual teacher for what this means for your student,” officials advised in a statement. “We understand that with this type of weather, there is the potential for loss of power and internet service, which would impact the ability to access virtual learning. If you should have a power or internet outage, please know that we will work with your student to address missed assignments. Above all else, please take all precautions to remain safe during this weather event.”

The district encourages parents to continue checking its website (www.lancastercsd.com) for more updates.

York School District One

“Out of an abundance of caution, York School District One will shift to eLearning tomorrow, Friday, January 21, because of potentially severe winter weather predicted for our area,” a release from YSD said.

All afterschool activities and sporting events are canceled for Friday, January 21. A decision will be made about sports and extracurricular activities scheduled to occur Saturday, January 22 at a later time.

Decisions regarding Saturday will be released via the school’s social media (www.facebook.com/york1schools/ on Facebook and https://twitter.com/York1Schools on Twitter.)

Families should monitor their emails for updates regarding schoolwork Friday.

Students will have the opportunity to submit their work when they return to school in person if unable to submit while at home, the statement says.

Chester

A release by Chester County School District says Friday will be a remote learning day for students.

Students will not take live online classes, but work independently on provided assignments (the same system the district used Tuesday).

Teachers have been asked to be available via email throughout the day to assist with assignments, the statement said.

The district says families who experience a loss of power or internet service should contact their schools when possible, and advise them of the situation.

All after-school activities and athletic events scheduled for Friday also will be canceled. Normal school operations will continue Monday, January 24, 2022.

Clover

Clover School District will also transition classes to eLearning on Friday. A statement from the district says that schools will communicate more information on class schedules tomorrow.
