Black History Month: York County site offers insights to a slave’s life. Tour and learn.

A York County historic site is celebrating Black History Month by telling the stories and experiences of the people it enslaved.

Historice Brattonsville, an 800-acre site, has 30 historic structures spanning the 18th and 19th centuries that visitors can tour and learn about its history through interpreters. In February, the site is hosting the series “By Way of the Back Door.”

Herald photographer and videographer Tracy Kimball sat down with two African American interpreters on Feb. 12, where they demonstrated the trades enslaved people at Brattonsville learned -- seamstresses, blacksmiths, cooks and carpenters.

Historic Brattonsville will continue the series Saturday, Feb. 19 featuring daily life for enslaved people and Saturday, Feb. 26, where interpreters will demonstrate the arts and cultural contributions of Brattonsville’s enslaved people.
