Driver killed, passenger hurt in Lancaster SC crash, officials say

A driver was killed and a passenger airlifted to a Charlotte hospital after a fatal crash in South Carolina Thursday night.

The wreck happened around 6:30 p.m. on Camp Creek Road east of Lancaster, said Master Trooper Gary Miller of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The driver of a 2010 Mini Cooper died at the scene after the car went off the right side of the road and overturned when it stuck an embankment and a tree, Miller said.

The driver who died was identified as Taylor Justus Burgess, 31, of Lancaster, according to Lancaster County Coroner Karla Knight-Deese.

The passenger was airlifted by helicopter to Carolinas Medical Center in Mecklenburg County with injuries, officials said. The condition of the passenger has not been released.

The area of the crash is south of the North Carolina state line, southeast of Charlotte.

The crash remains under investigation by troopers and the coroner’s office.

The fatality is the fourth on Lancaster County roads in 2022, according to statistics from the S.C. Department of Public Safety.
