Charlotte man crossing I-77 on foot in York County SC killed in crash
A Charlotte man crossing Interstate 77 on foot in South Carolina died Thursday when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle, officials said.
The pedestrian who died at the scene of the crash was identified as Edras Osman Mendez Castillo, 21, according to a written statement from York County Coroner Sabrina Gast.
Castillo was crossing I-77 near Exit 90, not far from the North Carolina state line, when he was struck, Gast said.
The coroner’s office and the S.C. Highway Patrol are investigating the fatality.
The area on I-77 near the state line is among the busiest travel areas in York County, S.C. Department of Transportation statistics show.
Thursday’s fatality was the fifth on York County roads in 2022, according to statistics from the S.C. Department of Public Safety.
