One person was killed and another injured Friday morning in a fiery South Carolina crash on Interstate 77 in Chester County, officials said.

The wreck happened around 1 a.m. on I-77 southbound near mile marker 59, said Trooper Joe Hovis of the S.C. Highway Patrol. A box truck went off the right side of the road and hit a tree, Hovis said.

The driver of the truck died at the scene and a passenger was injured, Hovis said. The passenger was taken to Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill for treatment.

The crash caused a fire in the truck, according to Richburg Fire & Rescue.

The highway was partially blocked for several hours as the site was worked, but re-opened later Friday morning, officials said.

The Chester County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the name of the person who was killed.

The collision remains under investigation by the S.C. Department of Public Safety and the coroner.

The fatal crash was the second in Chester County in less than a day. A driver was killed Thursday morning in a a head-on collision with a truck pulling a trailer on U.S. 21, law enforcement, emergency and fire officials said.
