The Museum of York County will host “Pluto-Palooza!” from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday to celebrate NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft’s flyby of the distant dwarf planet.

Designed to make the first close-up study of Pluto and its moons and other icy worlds in the distant Kuiper Belt, New Horizons has been collecting data since 2006. New Horizons is scheduled to phone home Tuesday evening, and the museum’s Settlemyre Planetarium will present the live NASA TV broadcast from 8 to 9:15 p.m.

The planetarium will feature bonus full-dome shows during “Pluto-Palooza!” from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m:

New Horizons for a Little Planet,” a six-minute animated film presenting a lighthearted introduction to the New Horizons mission.

Perfect Little Planet,” a 30-minute animated film about the ultimate family vacation exploring some of the best-known sights of the solar system.

From Earth to the Universe,” a 30-minute film showcasing an illustrious voyage of time and space.

The celebration includes Moon Pies, crafts, giveaways and activities throughout the evening.

The Carolina Skygazers, an amateur astronomy club that meets in the planetarium, will be on the museum grounds with telescopes for safe viewing of the sun (weather permitting) until about 8 p.m.

The event is free with museum admission: adults $6, seniors $5, ages 4-17 $3, 3 and younger and CHM members get in free. For information, go to chmuseums.org/myco or call 803-329-2121.

Special events

▪ Agape Senior will host its third anniversary celebration and dog show from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Agape, 1020 N. Congress St., York. Dog show registration will be 9-9:30 a.m. Shot records are required. Those who don’t have a dog are welcome to attend. Dog rescue groups from all over York County will attend to answer adoption questions. Pelican’s Shaved Ice will pass out snow cones for two-legged and four-legged guests. There will be a drawing for a chance to win two tickets to the Aug. 7 Lady Antebellum concert in Charlotte.

▪ An Afternoon of Bach – with compositions from “The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I” performed on the clavichord by David Richardson of Rock Hill – will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church, 22 E. Liberty St., York. The free event is open to the public.

▪ Count Me In to Do the Right Thing will host its eighth annual Back-2-School event 5-8 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Richburg Fire Department, 225 N. Main St., Richburg. ▪ Artisans, craftsmen and holiday vendors are invited to participate in the third annual Artisans Holiday Show on Dec. 5 at 212 S. Main St., Lancaster, as part of the Red Rose Holiday Tour. ▪ Woodland will perform at the Rock Hill Parks, Recreation & Tourism Department’s free Summer in the Park Concert series, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Fewell Park, 1204 Alexander Road. Folk duo Jason Herring and Melissa Myers Harper will perform Top 10 covers and originals with acoustic instruments and a suitcase kick drum. Bring a picnic and blanket or lawn chair.

▪ Finley High School alumni chapter of Charlotte will celebrate its 30th anniversary Sept. 4-5 with its National Scholarship Dinner, Dance and Reunion Ball at Embassy Suites in Concord, N.C. ▪ Bowling Green First Baptist Church will host a benefit hot dog and yard sale 8 a.m. Saturday at 1683 U.S. 321 North, Clover, to raise money for Amber Mills to get a pair of eSight eyeglasses an electronic device that helps the legally blind to see.

Clubs

▪ The Ballroom Dance Club will meet 7:30-10:20 p.m. July 17 in the Oak Room at Fort Mill Golf Course Club House, 101 Country Club Drive. A free dance lesson is included. ▪ Carolina Community Actions is accepting enrollment in the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Program for 2015. Applicants must be ages 17-21 and meet the income guidelines to qualify. The program offers participants up to $5,000 in the following program services:

Assistance with obtaining a GED.

CNA training and assistance with tuition, books, uniform supplies and state exam fees.

Occupational training from a technical and occupational institution in York, Chester or Lancaster counties.

Pharmacy tech internships.

Dental chair-side assistant and office training.

Heavy equipment operator’s training.

Welding training.

Truck driving.

Incentives up to $300.

The program is paid for through the Catawba Regional Council of Government. CCA is a private, nonprofit corporation that promotes self-reliance of low-income individuals and families by forming partnerships that provide a systematic reduction of the causes and conditions of poverty.

Library programs

▪ Local author LeAnne Burnett Morse will discuss Fort Mill’s history, as featured in her new book “Fort Mill” from the “Images of America” series, at 10 a.m. July 18 at the Fort Mill Library.

She will discuss the Catawba Indians, the first European settlers, the arrival of the railroad and cotton to the area, the Civil War impact on Fort Mill, the rise of Springs Mills, and changes over the past 50 years. ▪ Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism will host a free Football Coaches Clinic 6-8:30 p.m. July 16 at Sullivan Middle School for all youth coaches. The clinic, led by former Northwestern High School football coach Jimmy Wallace, will focus on the fundamentals of football while teaching and sharing some of the most dynamic drills of the game.

After-school care

▪ The Fort Mill YMCA will offer an Afterschool Program for K-fifth grade with structured daily schedules including homework assistance, designated physical fitness, healthy snacks, and time to play games and socialize with friends.
