1 dead after a collision in York County where 2 trucks hit tree in road, trooper says
One person was killed Friday in a crash where two vehicles hit a tree in the road in western York County, the S.C. Highway Patrol said.
The collision involving a truck-tractor and a pickup truck happened before 7 a.m. on S.C. 49 near S.C. 322, said highway patrol Master Trooper Gary Miller.
The driver of the pickup truck died, Miller said.
Miller said in a recorded statement the pickup truck was traveling north and the truck-tractor was heading south when both vehicles simultaneously struck a tree in the roadway. The truck-tractor jack-knifed and struck the pickup, Miller said.
The truck-tractor driver and a passenger were not hurt, Miller said.
No charges have been filed in the wreck, Miller said.
The York County Coroner’s Office has not released the identity of the person who died.
The area of the crash is a rural part of York County, southwest of Rock Hill and York, and east of the Broad River.
York County Sheriff’s Office deputies assisted with traffic control after the crash, said sheriff’s office spokesman Trent Faris.
The coroner’s office and the highway patrol are investigating the fatality.
The death is the 27th on county roads so far in 2022, according to S.C. Department of Public Safety statistics. In 2021, there were 43 fatalities on York County roads, statistics show.
