Christmas has passed and so has the time for keeping a real tree in the house.

For residents of York County, recycling that tree is easy - and free.

All 16 York County waste collection centers are accepting Christmas trees through the end of January, said Josh Stender, a spokesman for York County.

The free service runs through Jan. 31, 2023, on days and times the centers are open, Stender said. The centers are closed Monday, Jan. 2 in observance of the New Year holiday.

Any tree stand, ornaments, and lights must be removed before the tree will be accepted.

The centers for free drop-off are for York County household/residential use only - no businesses, officials said.

The trees are shipped afterward to the county landfill where they are later recycled into mulch.

A full listing of collection centers and hours can be found at the York County Web site. For more information, call 803-628-3181.
