The USA Cycling Masters Track National Championships will take place Tuesday through July 26 at the Giordana Velodrome in Rock Hill. The event will include these track cycling disciplines: individual and team pursuits, scratch races, points races, match sprints (individual and team) and Madison.

Riders competing in the Masters National Championships must be 35 or older; some riders older than 70 are expected to compete. More than 400 cyclists are expected, including reigning national champions, prior world champions and many nationally ranked riders.

Rider warmups begin at 5 p.m., and races start at 6 p.m. each day except July 26. The action continues until all races are complete. Racing begins at 10 a.m. July 26, with team pursuits, team sprints and Madison races. National Championship awards will be presented in various events at the conclusion of racing each evening and on Sunday morning.

Races are open to the public, and admission is free. Food and drinks will be available for sale. Parking is free; shuttle buses will be available for remote parking.

Special events

▪ VFW Post 3746 will sponsor a Cherokee casino bus trip Saturday. The bus leaves at 7 a.m. from the Kmart parking lot on Cherry Road and will return about 8:30 p.m. Cost is $40, with a $20 credit returned at the casino. For reservations, call 803-366-1910. Another trip will be Sept. 12.

▪ Count Me In to Do the Right Thing will host its eighth annual Back-2-School event 5-8 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Richburg Fire Department, 225 N. Main St., Richburg. The event will feature games, bingo and free school supplies to the first 100 students. Free refreshments. Bring lawn chairs. For information, email count15mein@truvista.net.

▪ Rock Grove AME Zion Church will have a clothing giveaway, 6:30-11 a.m. Saturday at the church, 1460 Margaret St. Items available range in size from infant to adults. Open to the public.

Fundraisers

▪ The Village Market and Master’s Car Club will host a benefit Show and Shine, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. July 25 at 2185 Neely Store Road, Rock Hill, for David Choate to help pay medical bills. Choate was bitten by a brown recluse spider two years ago and was recently diagnosed with leukemia. Registration is donation only. A raffle for a Remington 30-06 model 770 rifle will be held. ▪ A youth hot dog and bake sale will be 10 a.m. Saturday at ​Clover Wesleyan Church, 102 Parkview Lane.

Entertainment

▪ The Greater York Chamber of Commerce will host its Downtown Live July concert, 5:30-9:30 p.m. Friday featuring Carolina Rhythm Band, a six-piece group playing beach, Motown, country and classic rock. ▪ Fort Mill Community Playhouse presents the Summer Youth Production, “Miss Nelson is Missing,” 7:30 p.m. July 31, Aug. 1 and Aug. 7-8, and 3 p.m. Aug. 2 and Aug. 8 at the playhouse, 615 Banks St. The play is based on the book by Harry Allard and James Marshall and adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher.

Classes

▪ The Arts Council of Chester County will host an Adult Art Class: BYOB Acrylic Painting Party with Christy Buchanan 5:30-7:30 p.m. July 23 at the Arts Council Building, 123 Main St., Chester. Participants will learn to paint background, border, swirls, to create a whimsical summery watermelon on a 12-by-16 canvas.

Food pantry

▪ The Second Harvest Partners, sponsored by Providence Presbytery, will have a hunger relief site 9 a.m. Friday at Unity Presbyterian Church, Fort Mill. Library programs

▪ York County Library staff will be available 1-5 p.m. Friday at the main library in Rock Hill to answer basic questions about laptops, tablets, e-readers, email, Internet safety, social media or other computer related topics. Participants may bring in their own computer or device and library staff members will assist with any questions on a first-come basis. No appointment is necessary.

▪ Local author LeAnne Burnett Morse will discuss Fort Mill’s history, as featured in her new book “Fort Mill” from the “Images of America” series, at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Fort Mill Library.

She will discuss the Catawba Indians, the first European settlers, the arrival of the railroad and cotton to the area, the Civil War impact on Fort Mill, the rise of Springs Mills, and changes over the past 50 years. Be a Hero, 2-3:30 p.m. Tuesday for ages 11-17. Help Put together care packages for the library’s homebound patrons and earn volunteer time. All materials provided. Call 803-981-5830 to register.

“Stone Soup,” by Porkchop Productions, 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. Wednesday for ages 3-11. Porkchop Productions adapts the famous folk tale, with lots of audience participation. No registration required.

Recreation

After-school care

▪ The Fort Mill YMCA will offer an Afterschool Program for K-fifth graders with structured daily schedules including homework assistance, designated physical fitness, healthy snacks, and time to play games and socialize with friends. Registration is open to Orchard Park Elementary School students. Space is limited. Registration is on a first-come basis. Cost is $65 per week for members and nonmembers with a one-time fee of $25 for nonmembers. For information, call 803-548-8020.

Volunteers

▪ RideAbility Therapeutic Riding Center in Clover welcomes new volunteers. No experience is necessary; training is provided. The center helps families of children and adults with special needs build and improve strength, balance, core stability, focus, attention and increase confidence and self-esteem with facilitative interaction with horses and riding. RideAbility also serves veterans with its Equine Services of Heroes Program.

Anyone who is interested in participating in the 2015 fall program for children and adults with special needs, the Equine Services for Heroes or the riding program can contact the center via email at rideabilitysc@gmail.com. Space is limited. Sponsors, including individuals, churches or clubs, are also needed to provide financial support for children and adult riders and veterans.

▪ The nonprofit Friends of the York County Animal Shelter needs volunteers to help bathe, groom, exercise, socialize, train and provide adoption information for the animals, as well as assist in follow-ups, publicity, marketing and fulfilling other jobs at the shelter.
