Part of a York County highway will close for three months. Here’s what you need to know
The South Carolina Department of Transportation announced a road closure in York County, that will last three months.
SCDOT will close Paraham Road between Campbell Road and S.C. 49, or Charlotte Highway. The Lake Wylie road will be closed from Campbell to Vanderbilt Drive. The rest of Paraham heading north to S.C. 49 will be local traffic only.
The expected road closure begins at 7 a.m. on Sept. 7. The road won’t reopen until Dec. 6.
Campbell and Charlotte Highway are the two detour routes. Drivers essentially will make a 1.17-mile triangle to get around the closure. The work is part of a larger upgrade at Paraham and Campbell.
In August SCDOT began reconfiguration what eventually will put a single-lane roundabout at Paraham and Campbell. A temporary setup involves a four-way stop. The SCDOT traffic safety office anticipates a significant reduction in crashes and crashes with injuries by installing the roundabout.
A statewide highway safety program identified the intersection as one that would benefit from the roundabout.
SCDOT traffic counts show the section of Campbell Road, which will take new detour traffic, typically sees 1,200 vehicle trips per day. The nearest count sites on Paraham Road see 4,600 and 4,700 vehicles per day. The nearest sites on Charlotte Highway see 7,000 and 7,500 vehicles.
