The Friends of the York County Library summer book sale will be July 30-Aug. 1 at First ARP Church gymnasium, 201 E. White St., Rock Hill.
Thousands of books will be for sale at $2 per inch. DVDs and audiobooks will also be for sale.
Opening night for Friends members will be 4-7 p.m. July 30. Memberships will be sold at the door for $15 for individuals and $25 for families. The sale will be open to the public 9 a.m.-7 p.m. July 31 and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 1. All items will be half price on Aug. 1.

▪ Northside Baptist Church will host its annual family back-to-school event, 9-11 a.m. Aug. 8 at 1140 Curtis St., Rock Hill. Rain date, Aug. 15. There will be bounce houses, face painting, balloon artist, games and refreshments. Community agencies will provide information and have giveaway items. ▪ Count Me In to Do the Right Thing will host its eighth annual Back-2-School event 5-8 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Richburg Fire Department, 225 N. ▪ Artisans, crafters and holiday vendors are invited to participate in the third annual Artisans Holiday Show on Dec. 5 at 212 S. Main St., Lancaster, as part of the Red Rose Holiday Tour. Fundraisers
▪ Elegant Hair Studio will host a community fundraiser, 6-9 p.m. Friday for the Children’s Organ Transplant Association in honor of Jordan Diggs, a Chester-area teen who needs a kidney transplant. ▪ Fort Mill Community Playhouse presents the Summer Youth Production, “Miss Nelson Is Missing,” 7:30 p.m. July 31-Aug. 1 and Aug. 7-8, and 3 p.m. Aug. 2 and Aug. 8 at the playhouse, 615 Banks St. The play is based on the book by Harry Allard and James Marshall and adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher.

After-school programs
▪ The Discovery Station and Emmett Scott Center after-school programs, operated by the Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department for children in K5 through fifth grade, are taking applications for the 2015-’16 school year. The programs offer homework assistance, literacy development, character education, arts, outdoor recreation and other fun activities.
Both operate on the Rock Hill school district calendar. Discovery Station is at Fewell Park Recreation Center, 1204 Alexander Road, with bus transportation available from Richmond Drive Elementary. The Emmett Scott Center program is at 801 Crawford Road, with bus transportation available from Old Pointe, the Children’s School, Oakdale, Sunset Park, Ebinport, Finley Road, Independence, Mount Gallant and Richmond Drive elementary schools. $21 per week. The SCOPE after-school tutoring and enrichment program is offered at Boyd Hill Recreation Center, 1165 Constitution Ave., Rock Hill, 4-5:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday beginning Sept. 2 for grades K5 through fifth grade. Volunteers
▪ RideAbility Therapeutic Riding Center in Clover welcomes new volunteers. No experience is necessary; training is provided. The center helps families of children and adults with special needs build and improve strength, balance, core stability, focus, attention and increase confidence and self-esteem with facilitative interaction with horses and riding. RideAbility also serves veterans with its Equine Services of Heroes Program.
Anyone who is interested in participating in the 2015 fall program for children and adults with special needs, the Equine Services for Heroes or the riding program can contact the center via email at rideabilitysc@gmail.com. Space is limited. Sponsors are also needed.
▪ The nonprofit Friends of the York County Animal Shelter needs volunteers to help bathe, groom, exercise, socialize, train and provide adoption information for the animals, as well as assist in follow-ups, publicity, marketing and fulfilling other jobs at the shelter.
