Having a real Christmas tree — spruces, firs and pines — in the living room was terrific but the time to take that tree out has arrived.

In York County, residents can get rid of the evergreens for free through late January at any of the county’s 16 recycling centers, county spokesman Greg Suskin said.

The trees are later ground into mulch.

Attendants at all the centers will show where the trees can be dropped off, Suskin said.

Trees must be stripped of ornaments and lights. However, if residents have old holiday lights that don’t work anymore, those can be dropped off at the same recycling centers, too.

For a list of all 16 centers to find the one closest to you and hours of operation, visit York County’s Web site.

One last holiday reminder - recycling centers are closed Monday, Jan. 1.
