Neighborhoods celebrate National Night Out Tuesday
The Hunger Outreach Program group, which is comprised of area churches, will host a National Night Out Rock Hill picnic, 6-7 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of Flint Hill Baptist Church, 1214 Flint Hill St. The picnic will be held rain or shine. All area residents are invited to attend.
▪ The Spencer Estates Neighborhood Association will hold its annual “National Night Out” Ice Cream Social and Block Party at 6 p.m. Tuesday on Christopher Circle at Candlewood Lane. Bring homemade ice cream, cake, or other dessert, and lawn chairs. Beverages and paper and plastic products will be provided. Invite a former or a new neighbor to join you.
Special events
The Heart2Heart Foundation in partnership with Whole Health Reset, Piedmont Medical Center and Carolina Cardiology will present Mission Red: A Powerful Heart Health Symposium for Women Sept. 26 at St. Philip Neri Church in Fort Mill. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. with free heart health screenings by Piedmont Medical Center and complimentary 12-lead EKG and review to qualified women by Carolina Cardiology Associates.
Session speakers include Cindy Kelly of Whole Health Reset, Jimmie Sherrill of Piedmont Medical Center, and keynote speaker, Dr. Scott Seibel of Catawba-Piedmont Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery.

▪ In lieu of the inclement weather on July 4, the Rock Hill Civitan Club will put out American flags Friday in honor of veterans who have served in the U.S. military who have been awarded a Purple Heart for their service to our country. ▪ The Master Gardeners of York County’s annual garlic sale will be noon Friday at the Learning Center at Glencairn Garden, 835 Edgemont Ave., Rock Hill. The sale follows the First Friday in the Garden program, “All About Spiders,” which begins at 11 a.m. and is open to the public. Each year, master gardeners plant and harvest several types of garlic, using different varieties to determine which grow best locally. Varieties this year include: Inchelium Red, Lorz Italian, Creole Red and S&H Silver. Prices range from 50 cents to $2.50 per bulb, with most between $1-$1.50.

▪ The Central City Optimist Club will host its 12th annual Charity Golf Tournament Sept. 12 at Spring Lake County Club, 1735 Spring Lake Road, York. ▪ The Arts Council of Chester County will host a painting class for ages 5-18 with artist Penelope Winslow 3:30-5 p.m. Thursday at the arts council, 123 Main St. Participants will use acrylic paints on canvas to create their own masterpiece of cozy lanterns in the night sky. Cost is $28. All supplies are provided. Registration deadline is Wednesday. Siblings get a $5 discount. This class is sponsored in part by a grant from the OMNOVA Foundation.

Recreation
▪ Registration for Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism’s Fall Youth Sports will be Monday-Aug. 21. Offered are football for ages 7-10 as of Sept. 1 and recreation soccer for ages 5-13 as of Sept. 1. Both cost $42.
Those who participated in the 2015 Spring Youth Sports leagues will get a $7 reduction in the registration fee because they purchased insurance in the spring.
Register during office hours Monday-Friday at Manchester Meadows, the Cherry Park tower, the PRT office (Room 390) at City Hall, and at the four recreation centers.
