Historic Rock Hill will throw open the doors of the White Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 21.

Built in 1839 in the historic East Town District, the White Home, at 258 E. White St., was one of the first homes constructed in Rock Hill.

The free open house will include guided tours of the historic home and garden, a sale in the gift shop and light refreshments.

▪ Sistah 2 Sistah of South Carolina will host 2015 Youth Summit, 5-8 p.m. Saturday Aug. 8 at the Community Performance Center, 249 E. Main St., Rock Hill. ▪ The Heart2Heart Foundation, in partnership with Whole Health Reset, Piedmont Medical Center and Carolina Cardiology, will present Mission Red: A Powerful Heart Health Symposium for Women Sept. 26 at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Fort Mill. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. with free heart health screenings by Piedmont Medical Center and complimentary 12-lead EKG and review to qualified women by Carolina Cardiology Associates.

Session speakers include Cindy Kelly of Whole Health Reset, Jimmie Sherrill of Piedmont Medical Center, and keynote speaker Dr. Scott Seibel of Catawba-Piedmont Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery.

▪ Agapé Rehab Post-Acute Care Center will host a reception for nurse Betty Jenkins 5-7:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at the center, 159 Sedgewood Drive, Rock Hill. ▪ Humorist Jeanne Robertson will headline Hospice & Community Care’s 3rd Annual LOL event Sept. 3 at Baxter Hood Center on Anderson Road in Rock Hill. Proceeds will go to underinsured hospice patients in the community.

The evening will feature an opening reception and lots of laughs. Robertson is an expert in humor – whether regaling audiences with her experiences as a 6-foot-2 Miss Congeniality winner in the Miss America Pageant, or outlining the steps to developing a sense of humor.

The author of three books on humor, Robertson has produced six DVD/CD humor programs in the past 11 years and can be heard daily on Sirius XM radio’s Laugh USA family comedy channel.

Liz Smith Anderson, administrator of the Chester County Historical Society Museums & Archives, will speak. In 2009, she became administrator and worked in the historic 1914 Chester County Jail, where she found in the archives, the Henry O. Nichols photography collection. It is one of the most viewed collections in South Carolina Digital Library Collections and also is part of the National Public Library.

Classes

▪ Clemson Extension agent Paul Thompson will lead a free workshop on late-summer gardening, 10 a.m.-noon Wednesday at the Chester Extension office, 109 Ella St., Chester. He will share tips on things to do in your garden in late summer as well as how to prepare for fall planting. Free and open to the public. Recreation

▪ The Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department is offering “Families Exploring Nature” one Saturday each month to get families outdoors for a hike in the woods and other activities. Programs will be 9:30-11:30 a.m. Aug. 15, Sept. 12, Oct. 3 and Nov. 14. Participants should bring water and comfortable walking shoes; a camera is also suggested. ▪ Registration for Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism’s Fall Youth Sports is open through Aug. 21. Offered are football for ages 7-10 as of Sept. 1 and recreation soccer for ages 5-13 as of Sept. 1. Both cost $42.

Those who participated in the 2015 Spring Youth Sports leagues will get a $7 reduction in the registration fee because they purchased insurance in the spring.

Register during office hours Monday-Friday at Manchester Meadows, the Cherry Park tower, the PRT office (Room 390) at City Hall, and at the four recreation centers.

First-time players must bring a copy of their birth certificate to register. Returning players may register online a CityofRockHill.com/PRT.

Volunteer coaches are also needed for these programs. Those interested in coaching should call Jason Reynolds at 803-329-5640.

Volunteers

▪ RideAbility Therapeutic Riding Center in Clover welcomes new volunteers. No experience is necessary; training is provided. The center helps families of children and adults with special needs build and improve strength, balance, core stability, focus, attention and increase confidence and self-esteem with facilitative interaction with horses and riding. RideAbility also serves veterans with its Equine Services of Heroes Program.

Anyone who is interested in participating in the 2015 fall program for children and adults with special needs, the Equine Services for Heroes or the riding program can contact the center at rideabilitysc@gmail.com. Space is limited. Sponsors are also needed.

▪ Make-A-Wish South Carolina is seeking volunteers. Bilingual volunteers are especially needed. Interest webinars are offered at 6:30 p.m. the second Wednesday of every month. ▪ The nonprofit Friends of the York County Animal Shelter needs volunteers to help bathe, groom, exercise, socialize, train and provide adoption information for the animals, as well as assist in follow-ups, publicity, marketing and fulfilling other jobs at the shelter.
