Allison Creek Bluegrass opens 14th season Sept. 3

Allison Creek Bluegrass will kick off its 14th season of live bluegrass music at 7 p.m. Sept. 3 at Allison Creek Presbyterian Church at S.C. 274 and Allison Creek Road, near Lake Wylie.

While the opening-night band has not been named, performers at future concerts include Every Now and Then (Sept. 17), One Way In Christ (Oct. 1), The Hinson Girls (Nov. 5), and Bluegrass Travelers (Nov. 19).

Doors open at 6 p.m. Hot dogs, hamburgers and dessert are available at 6:30 p.m. and the music starts at 7 p.m.

Admission is free, but love offerings are accepted.

Special events

▪ The fourth annual Butts & Bluegrass BBQ Festival is scheduled for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 12 at Clover Community Park.

Sample from a large variety of barbecue, then vote for your favorite. Judging will be the S.C. BarbequeAssociation. Proceeds will benefit the Full Choice Food Pantry at the Clover Area Assistance Center.

The festival also will feature live bluegrass music, a kids play zone and health screenings.

▪ The second annual Tawba Fest will be 2-10 p.m. Sept. 12 at Riverwalk in Rock Hill. The event brings together party and play in an active, outdoor celebration along the banks of the Catawba River. The event includes free fitness classes and a market with local artists and vendors, food trucks and regionally brewed craft beer. For information, go to tawbafest.com.

▪ Humorist Jeanne Robertson will headline Hospice & Community Care’s 3rd Annual LOL event Sept. 3 at Baxter Hood Center on Anderson Road in Rock Hill. Proceeds will go to under-insured hospice patients in the community.

The evening will feature an opening reception and lots of laughs. Robertson is an expert in humor – whether regaling audiences with her experiences as a 6-foot-2-inch Miss Congeniality winner in the Miss America Pageant, or outlining the steps to developing a sense of humor.

The author of three books on humor, Robertson has produced six DVD/CD humor programs in the past 11 years and can be heard daily on Sirius XM radio’s Laugh USA family comedy channel.

▪ Ebenezer Baptist Church of Rock Hill is planning a 2016 trip to Sight & Sound theatres in Harrisburg, Pa. to see “Samson” and visit Hershey Park, June 21-23. Fundraisers

▪ Team Morgan will host a lemonade and baked good stand 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday Aug. 29 at 1040 Ridge Road, Rock Hill to raise money for the “Roll With it Morgan” team for the St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer, Sept. 26 in Charlotte. Morgan, 6, died this spring as a result of a brain tumor and was treated at St. Jude.

▪ Project Safe Pet, animal rescue group, will have a fundraiser, 5-9 p.m. Sunday at Moe’s Southwest Grill, 1910 Cinema Dr. Ste 102 Rock Hill. Moe’s will donate a portion of the proceeds to the group. ▪ Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church history committee will host its second annual Letitia D. Simpson Memorial Walk, 7 a.m. Saturday at the church parking lot on Dunlap Roddey Road. Meetings

▪ Area barbers will meet 4-6 p.m. Sunday Aug. 30 at 208 W. Black St., Rock Hill, to discuss forming a Barber’s Group. The group will meet quarterly to keep up with changes in the industry and become part of the Barber Association.

▪ Yellow jackets will be the topic of First Friday in the Garden, 11 a.m. Sept.4 at the Glencairn Garden Learning Center, 825 Edgemont Ave., Rock Hill. Free and open to the public. Clemson Extension Agent Paul Thompson will discuss how to deal with the pesky insects. The program is a public service of Clemson Extension Service, Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department, and the Master Gardeners of York County.

Auditions

▪ Rock Hill Community Theatre will have auditions for “Waiting Rooms” 6 p.m. Aug. 30 and 7 p.m. Aug. 31 at the theatre, 546 S. Cherry Rd., behind The ROC thrift store. Attendance both nights is not required. Set in the South, this comedy follows the lives of three siblings as they deal with the sickness and the eventual passing of their mother. The play is written by Laura Sansing Pfizenmayer, formerly of York. Parts are available for six women and three men. Auditions will include group cold readings. Welcome, but not required, are a resume and headshot. Performances are scheduled for Nov. 13-22. All conflicts between auditions and the final performance must be brought in writing to auditions.

▪ The Fort Mill Community Playhouse will hold auditions for its Dinner Theater, “Interruptions,” at 4 p.m. Aug. 30 and 7 p.m. Aug. 31 at Fort Mill Community Playhouse, 615 Banks St. “Interruptions” runs Nov. 5-7 and 13-15. Bring a list of all conflicts during Sept. 14-Nov. 15. Headshot and resume is appreciated but not required. Auditions will consist of cold readings. Hunger relief

The Second Harvest Partners, sponsored by Providence Presbytery, will have a hunger relief site 9 a.m. Friday at Boyd Hill Baptist, 315 Glenn St., Rock Hill. Recreation

▪ The Rock Hill Area Senior Sports Classic offers a variety of sports activities for seniors ages 50 and older. This year’s event will be Sept. 14-23 at Boyd Hill Recreation Center and other nearby facilities. The event is coordinated by the Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department.

The sports classic includes golf, pickleball, swimming, basketball free throw, table tennis, shuffleboard, horseshoes and bowling. All skill levels are welcome.

A free Health Fair will be 10 a.m.-noon Sept. 17 from at Boyd Hill. Vendors will provide information on health and wellness. Registration is not required.

Registration for the classic is $15, due by Sept. 4. The fee includes a T-shirt and two lunches. All sports activities are included in the fee except for bowling and golf, which have additional fees to be paid at the time of competition.

Volunteers

▪ The nonprofit Friends of the York County Animal Shelter needs volunteers to help bathe, groom, exercise, socialize, train and provide adoption information for the animals, as well as assist in follow-ups, publicity, marketing and fulfilling other jobs at the shelter. NAMI monthly support groups and education sessions will be Aug. 8 at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, 421 Oakland Ave., Rock Hill. Support group meetings are at 6:15 p.m., connection support group in room 202 and family support group in room 203. The educational meeting is at at 7:30 p.m. in the basement dining area. There will be presentation about a program for middle and high school students, “Ending the Silence,” on identifying mental health conditions in themselves and their friends and what to do about it.
