▪ Historic Brattonsville will offer “By the Sweat of Our Brows,” an authentic interpretation of African American life on a Carolina plantation, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 12, 1444 Brattonsville Road, McConnells.

This year will feature African American descendants of the Bratton family who will be on site in person to share their stories.

At noon in the orientation room, Dr. Lisa Bratton will present her current research as a Bratton descendant titled – “Straight Outta Brattonsville: Amazing Facts about Enslavement that You Won’t Read in History Books.”

From 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., in addition to having the family representatives on site, Historic Brattonsville will have an array of activities that portray what life was like for the enslaved on the Carolina plantation.

Historic cooking over open hearths will be demonstrated in the kitchens and the antebellum homes will be open for guided tours. Outdoors, historically dressed interpreters will be making bricks out of mud from the creek.

Children can make rag dolls and play African-American folk games. Ham biscuits, sweet potato pies and other baked goods along with ice tea and lemonade will be available for purchase.

At 3 p.m. guests and descendants of the “Seven Sacred Families of Brattonsville” will unite in front of the Homestead. The Stars of Zion, a gospel choir from Rock Hill will sing. Nationally acclaimed poet Glenis Redmond will honor the voices from the past and beckon the voices of today. “By the Sweat of Our Brows” will culminate with the descendants ‘calling of the names’ from the 1865 “Freedmen’s List.”

Admission: $6, adults; $5, seniors $5, $3, youth $3 and free for Culture & Heritage Museum members and age 3 and younger.

▪ Seniors at the Senior Center at Highland Park in Rock Hill have created a fairy village during a month-long craft project and the community is invited to see the village of West Firefly Crossing, comprised of 16 quaint fairy homes with landscaped yards and whimsical touches. West Firefly Crossing’s “Tour of Homes” will be 10 a.m.-noon Tuesday, at the York County Council on Aging, 917 Standard St. Rock Hill. Admission is free. Pixie Punch and Cloud Cookies will be served.

▪ Gaston Farm Equestrian Center will host an Open Horse Show and Vendor Fair, 11 a.m. Sept. 12 at the farm, 2717 Gaston Farm Road, Chester. Gates open at 9:30 a.m. Free admission. Concessions available. For information, go to GastonFarmEquestrianCenter.com or call 803-374-6255.

▪ The fourth annual Butts & Bluegrass BBQ Festival is scheduled for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 12 at Clover Community Park. Sample from a large variety of barbecue, then vote for your favorite. Judging will be the S.C. Barbeque Association. Proceeds will benefit the Full Choice Food Pantry at the Clover Area Assistance Center. The festival also will feature live bluegrass music, a kids play zone and health screenings. Applications for vendors are being accepted for this year’s festival. ▪ The second annual Tawba Fest will be 2-10 p.m. Sept. 12 at Riverwalk in Rock Hill. The event brings together party and play in an active, outdoor celebration along the banks of the Catawba River. The event includes free fitness classes and a market with local artists and vendors, food trucks and regionally brewed craft beer. For information, go to tawbafest.com.

▪ Humorist Jeanne Robertson will headline Hospice & Community Care’s 3rd Annual LOL event Thursday at Baxter Hood Center on Anderson Road in Rock Hill. ▪ Ebenezer Baptist Church of Rock Hill is planning a 2016 trip to Sight & Sound theatres in Harrisburg, Pa. to see “Samson” and visit Hershey Park, June 21-23. Fundraisers

▪ Crime Stoppers of York County will have a pancake fundraiser, 8-10 a.m. Sept. 19 at Fatz Cafe, 478 Herlong Ave., Rock Hill. Breakfast includes, pancakes, sausage, fruit cup, drink. Cost is $7, adults and $4, ages 4-8. Proceeds go to Crime Stoppers.

▪ St. Anne Oratory Council of Knights of Columbus are selling the York County edition of the “Attractions Dining and Value Guide” to support its various ministries. Coupons in the book expire at the end of 2016. The book contains more than $3,600 in coupon savings and $175 in gift cards. Books are $25. ▪ South Pointe Band of Thunder barbecue and tailgate will be Sept, 18. Barbecue and smoked chicken plates, whole butts, barbecue by the pound and tailgate family packs will be available for purchase Prices range from $8 for plates to $40 for tailgate that feeds eight. ▪ Rock Hill Elks Lodge No. 1318 membership committee is holding a smoked Boston butt sale, 8 a.m.-noon Saturday at the Elks Lodge, 344 E. Main St. Cost is $25. ▪ The fifth annual Stiletto Sprint for Ovarian Cancer will be 8-11 a.m. Sept. 19th at South Park Mall, in Charlotte. Men, women, and children sprint in 2 1/2 inch heels to raise money for ovarian cancer research. For information go to www.tealheels.org.

▪ The Central City Optimist Club will host its 12th annual Charity Golf Tournament Sept. 12 at Spring Lake County Club, 1735 Springlake Road, York. Tee time is 8:15 a.m. Entry fee is $240 for a foursome and $60 single. Entertainment

▪ Allison Creek Bluegrass will kick off its 14th season of live bluegrass music at 7 p.m. Thursday at Allison Creek Presbyterian Church at S.C. 274 and Allison Creek Road, near Lake Wylie. While the opening-night band has not been named, performers at future concerts include Every Now and Then (Sept. 17), One Way In Christ (Oct. 1), The Hinson Girls (Nov. 5), and Bluegrass Travelers (Nov. 19). Doors open at 6 p.m. Hot dogs, hamburgers and dessert are available at 6:30 p.m. and the music starts at 7 p.m. Admission is free, but love offerings are accepted. ▪ Habitat for Humanity of York County is teaming with local churches, businesses, civic groups and individuals to continue its Neighborhood Revitalization work in Fort Mill. The projects which involve various types of repairs will begin in September and involve 13 homes in the Paradise Community. ▪ Yellow jackets will be the topic of First Friday in the Garden, 11 a.m. Friday at the Glencairn Garden Learning Center, 825 Edgemont Ave., Rock Hill. Free and open to the public. Clemson Extension Agent Paul Thompson will discuss how to deal with the pesky insects. The program is a public service of Clemson Extension Service, Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department, and the Master Gardeners of York County.

▪ Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 2008 Rock Hill will meet 7 p.m. Sept. 16 at the VFW Hall, 732 W. Main St., Rock Hill.

Hunger relief

The Second Harvest Partners, sponsored by Providence Presbytery, will have a hunger relief site 9 a.m. Thursday First Calvary Baptist, 228 Lucky Lane, Rock Hill. Recreation

▪ The Rock Hill Area Senior Sports Classic offers a variety of sports activities for seniors ages 50 and older. Registration is $15, due by Friday. This year’s event will be Sept. 14-23 at Boyd Hill Recreation Center and other nearby facilities. The event is coordinated by the Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department.

The sports classic includes golf, pickleball, swimming, basketball free throw, table tennis, shuffleboard, horseshoes and bowling. All skill levels are welcome.

A free Health Fair will be 10 a.m.-noon Sept. 17 from at Boyd Hill. Vendors will provide information on health and wellness. Registration is not required.

Registration fee includes a T-shirt and two lunches. All sports activities are included in the fee except for bowling and golf, which have additional fees to be paid at the time of competition.

▪ Symposium for Women Sept. 26 at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Fort Mill. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. with free heart health screenings by Piedmont Medical Center and complimentary 12-lead EKG and review to qualified women by Carolina Cardiology Associates. Session speakers include Cindy Kelly of Whole Health Reset, Jimmie Sherrill of Piedmont Medical Center, and keynote speaker Dr. Scott Seibel of Catawba-Piedmont Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery. Volunteers

▪ The nonprofit Friends of the York County Animal Shelter needs volunteers to help bathe, groom, exercise, socialize, train and provide adoption information for the animals, as well as assist in follow-ups, publicity, marketing and fulfilling other jobs at the shelter. ▪ NAMI monthly support groups and education sessions will be Sept. 8 at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, 421 Oakland Ave., Rock Hill. Support group meetings are at 6:15 p.m., connection support group in room 202 and family support group in room 203. The educational meeting is at at 7:30 p.m. in the basement dining area. There will be presentation about a program for middle and high school students, “Ending the Silence,” on identifying mental health conditions in themselves and their friends and what to do about it.
