The Shepherd’s Center of Rock Hill will host its fall session of Adventures in Learning 9:30-12:15 Mondays, Sept. 14-Oct. 19 at Oakland Baptist Church, 1067 Oakland Ave. Coffee is at 9:15. Adventures in Learning is opportunity for adults age 50 and older to try new skills, be creative, exercise, learn and socialize. The first visit is free. Cost for the six-week session is $20.

First classes are 10-11 a.m. with a series on Good Food, World War I History, art classes, intermediate bridge and creative writing classes. Homemade refreshments served 11-11:15 a.m. The second session includes critique, proactive and purposeful aging, creative writing and intermediate bridge and everyday safety. After classes, the Lunch Bunch meets for a Dutch treat meal at different restaurant every week.

▪ The fourth annual Butts & Bluegrass BBQ Festival is scheduled for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 12 at Clover Community Park. Sample from a large variety of barbecue, then vote for your favorite. Judging will be the S.C. Barbeque Association. Proceeds will benefit the Full Choice Food Pantry at the Clover Area Assistance Center. The festival also will feature live bluegrass music, a kids play zone and health screenings. Applications for vendors are being accepted for this year’s festival. ▪ The second annual Tawba Fest will be 2-10 p.m. Sept. 12 at Riverwalk in Rock Hill. The event brings together party and play in an active, outdoor celebration along the banks of the Catawba River. The event includes free fitness classes and a market with local artists and vendors, food trucks and regionally brewed craft beer. For information, go to tawbafest.com.

9/11 remembrance

Fundraisers

▪ Crime Stoppers of York County will have a pancake fundraiser, 8-10 a.m. Sept. 19 at Fatz Cafe, 478 Herlong Ave., Rock Hill. Breakfast includes, pancakes, sausage, fruit cup, drink. Cost is $7, adults and $4, ages 4-8. Proceeds go to Crime Stoppers.

▪ Tirzah ARP Church Cruise In Car and Tractor Show will be 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 12 at the church, 6161 Mount Gallant Road, York. Tony’s barbecue will be available for purchase. Proceeds go to the sports program at the church. For information, call Steve Maloney 803-366-3952.

▪ VFW Post 3746 will host its benefit dance, 8 p.m.-1 a.m. Friday at the VFW Post, West Main Street, Rock Hill. Tickets are $10. Proceeds go to the building fund for a new post on Crawford Road.

▪ St. Anne Oratory Council of Knights of Columbus are selling the York County edition of the “Attractions Dining and Value Guide” to support its various ministries. Coupons in the book expire at the end of 2016. The book contains more than $3,600 in coupon savings and $175 in gift cards. Books are $25. ▪ South Pointe Band of Thunder barbecue and tailgate will be Sept. 18. ▪ Cabin Creek Bluegrass Band will perform at the kickoff of Allison Creek Bluegrass’ 14th season of live music at 7 p.m. Thursday at Allison Creek Presbyterian Church at S.C. 274 and Allison Creek Road, near Lake Wylie. Performers at future concerts include Every Now and Then (Sept. 17), One Way In Christ (Oct. 1), The Hinson Girls (Nov. 5), and Bluegrass Travelers (Nov. 19). Doors open at 6 p.m. Hot dogs, hamburgers and dessert are available at 6:30 p.m. and the music starts at 7 p.m. Admission is free, but love offerings are accepted. Hunger relief

▪ The Second Harvest Partners, sponsored by Providence Presbytery, will have a hunger relief site 9 a.m. Thursday First Calvary Baptist, 228 Lucky Lane, Rock Hill. Health

▪ Symposium for Women Sept. 26 at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Fort Mill. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. with free heart health screenings by Piedmont Medical Center and complimentary 12-lead EKG and review to qualified women by Carolina Cardiology Associates. Session speakers include Cindy Kelly of Whole Health Reset, Jimmie Sherrill of Piedmont Medical Center, and keynote speaker Dr. Scott Seibel of Catawba-Piedmont Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery. Volunteers

▪ The nonprofit Friends of the York County Animal Shelter needs volunteers to help bathe, groom, exercise, socialize, train and provide adoption information for the animals, as well as assist in follow-ups, publicity, marketing and fulfilling other jobs at the shelter. Support groups

NAMI monthly support groups and education sessions will be Tuesday at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, 421 Oakland Ave., Rock Hill. Support group meetings are at 6:15 p.m., connection support group in room 202 and family support group in room 203. The educational meeting is at at 7:30 p.m. in the basement dining area. There will be presentation about a program for middle and high school students, “Ending the Silence,” on identifying mental health conditions in themselves and their friends and what to do about it.
