▪ York County Friends of the Library will have a book sale 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 25-26 at the Fort Mill branch of the York County Library, 1818 2nd Baxter Crossing. ▪ The Shepherd’s Center of Rock Hill will host its fall session of Adventures in Learning 9:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 14-Oct. 19, at Oakland Baptist Church, 1067 Oakland Ave. Coffee is at 9:15. Adventures in Learning is an opportunity for adults age 50 and older to try new skills, be creative, exercise, learn and socialize. The first visit is free. Cost for the six-week session is $20.

First classes are 10-11 a.m. with a series on Good Food, World War I History, art classes, intermediate bridge and creative writing classes. Homemade refreshments served 11-11:15 a.m. The second session includes critique, proactive and purposeful aging, creative writing, intermediate bridge and everyday safety. After classes, the Lunch Bunch meets for a Dutch treat meal at a different restaurant every week.

▪ “Seeking God Together,” a multicultural and interdenominational gathering of Christians to pray for revival and spiritual awakening will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Rock Hill Bible Fellowship Church, 1366 Amelia Ave. Other organizing churches include First Baptist, Lake Wylie Lutheran, Mount Hebron Baptist, First Calvary Baptist, Neely’s Creek ARP, Westminster Presbyterian and St. Barnabas Anglican, along with the York Baptist Association. This is the group’s fifth countywide gathering. Parking is limited; carpooling recommended.

▪ Gaston Farm Equestrian Center will host an Open Horse Show and Vendor Fair, 11 a.m. Saturday at 2717 Gaston Farm Road, Chester. Gates open at 9:30 a.m. Free admission. Concessions available. For information, go to GastonFarmEquestrianCenter.com or call 803-374-6255.

▪ The fourth annual Butts & Bluegrass BBQ Festival is scheduled for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Clover Community Park. Sample from a variety of barbecue, then vote for your favorite. Judging will be the S.C. Barbeque Association. Proceeds will benefit the Full Choice Food Pantry at the Clover Area Assistance Center. The festival will feature live bluegrass music, a kids play zone and health screenings. Applications for vendors are being accepted for this year’s festival. ▪ The second annual Tawba Fest will be 2-10 p.m. Saturday at Riverwalk in Rock Hill. The event features an outdoor celebration along the banks of the Catawba River. The event includes free fitness classes and a market with local artists and vendors, food trucks and regionally brewed craft beer. For information, go to tawbafest.com.

9/11 remembrance

▪ Lancaster County Patriots Day ceremonies and 9/11 prayer gathering will be noon Friday at the Historic Courthouse on Main Street. Residents, community leaders and pastors are invited for prayer. For information, call 803-286-7729 or email mastersministry@gmail.com.

▪ The public is invited to a moment of silence and ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Friday at the monument outside the York County Fire Training Grounds, 2151 Ogden Road, Rock Hill. The monument brought to York County by volunteer firefighters was built with a section of beam from the World Trade Center in New York and granite markers that honor those who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks where almost 3,000 people were killed. The monument will be moved in December to the new county fire training grounds near York.

▪ The town of Fort Lawn in Chester County will have a 9/11 ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the 9/11 monument outside the community center, 5554 Main St., Fort Lawn. Volunteer firefighter Richard Hulse commissioned a sculpture made from a piece of World Trade Center beam that is on display outside the community center. The public is invited.

▪ Volunteers from the Rolling Thunder Rock Hill chapter will wave American flags from several York County bridges over Interstate 77 on Friday, including the Patriot Leonard Farrington Memorial Bridge at the Sutton Road Exit 83 interchange. Flags will be waved during the morning 7-9 a.m. and afternoon 4-6 p.m.

The bridge was officially named for the late Farrington three years ago after Farrington, a World War II veteran, waved his American flag from the bridge the day of the attacks in 2001. He continued the annual event until his death in 2012.

Rolling Thunder now handles the flag waving duties and encourages participation of the public, fire departments, and other emergency responders. Volunteers will gather at the Home Deport parking lot at 6:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to deploy to bridges.

Fundraisers

▪ Sandlappers Parrot Head Club will host a dance and party, 7 p.m.-midnight Sept. 19 at Long Branch, 761 Riverview Road, Rock Hill to raise money for Make-A-Wish of South Carolina. The event includes live music by the Rockaholics, silent auction and door prizes, which include a Fines up Rouge Guitar autographed by Jimmy Buffet with certificate of authenticity, estate 14kt gold, pearl and diamond pendant and Cajon drum by Billy Bonham. ▪ Crime Stoppers of York County will have a pancake fundraiser, 8-10 a.m. Sept. 19 at Fatz Cafe, 478 Herlong Ave., Rock Hill. Breakfast includes, pancakes, sausage, fruit cup, drink. Cost is $7, adults and $4, ages 4-8. Proceeds go to Crime Stoppers.

▪ Tirzah ARP Church Cruise In Car and Tractor Show will be 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the church, 6161 Mount Gallant Road, York. Tony’s barbecue will be available for purchase. Proceeds go to the sports program at the church. For information, call Steve Maloney 803-366-3952.

▪ The Central City Optimist Club will host its 12th annual Charity Golf Tournament Saturday at Spring Lake County Club, 1735 Springlake Road, York. Tee time is 8:15 a.m. Entry fee is $240 for a foursome and $60 single. Proceeds to support club activities, scholarships, recognition of local law enforcement officers, and other youth and senior citizen activities. For information, call Charlie M. Entertainment

▪ Rock Hill Community Theatre presents “Midsummer/Jersey” at 8 p.m. Sept. 18-19 and 3 p.m. Sept. 13 and 20 at the theater, 546 S. Cherry Road, Suite N (behind ROC Emporium at Apple West Center).

This high-octane re-telling of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream is set on the boardwalk of a seaside town in modern-day New Jersey. The story revolves around the impending marriage of the Governor of New Jersey, the love affairs of four beach-bound high school crushes, a lively crew of fairies and the staff of the local beauty salon (run by Patti Quince and Stylist Nikki Bottom). Written by Ken Ludwig. Directed by Susan L.D. Smith

Clubs

▪ The Rock Hill Music Club will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church. Featured musician will be David Richardson playing the clavichord in an all Bach program. The club begins it 102nd year and will host its annual free Community Concert April 3 and its scholarship benefit Musical Tour of Homes on May 1.

Classes

▪ The Clemson Extension Service in York County in partnership with the city of Rock Hill will host the 4-H Come Grow With Me in the Garden series for ages 6-14, September-December at the Glencairn Garden Learning Center, 825 Edgemont Ave. Classes will be 9 a.m.-2 p.m. one Monday each month. Cost is $65. Students will learn natural environment, horticulture, vegetable gardening and leadership through creative activities and a service project. ▪ Rock Hill Adult Education will offer a beginners computer class beginning Wednesday at the Flexible Learning Center, 1234 Flint Street Ext. Classes will be each Wednesday and Thursday in September. Cost is $ 60. Pre-registration is required by calling 803-981-1375.

▪ ParentSmart Family Literacy Partnership is accepting applications for the adult education high school equivalency diploma class and the preschool classes. Students must be older than 17 and officially withdrawn from high school. Preschool students must be ages 2-5. Applicants must reside in the Rook Hill School District. ▪ The Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department is offering “Families Exploring Nature” 9:30-11:30 a.m. Sept. 12, Oct. 3, and Nov. 14 foster the spirit of exploration and instill an appreciation for the natural world. Participants should bring water and comfortable walking shoes; a camera is also suggested. Cost is $2 and pre-registration is required . ▪ Symposium for Women Sept. 26 at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Fort Mill. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. with free heart health screenings by Piedmont Medical Center and complimentary 12-lead EKG and review to qualified women by Carolina Cardiology Associates. Session speakers include Cindy Kelly of Whole Health Reset, Jimmie Sherrill of Piedmont Medical Center, and keynote speaker Dr. Scott Seibel of Catawba-Piedmont Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery. Support groups

▪ NAMI monthly support groups and education sessions will be Tuesday at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, 421 Oakland Ave., Rock Hill. Support group meetings are at 6:15 p.m., connection support group in room 202 and family support group in room 203. The educational meeting is at at 7:30 p.m. in the basement dining area. There will be presentation about a program for middle and high school students, “Ending the Silence,” on identifying mental health conditions in themselves and their friends and what to do about it.
