The Museum of York County, Anne Springs Close Greenway and the Rock Hill Outdoor Center at Riverwalk will host special outdoor activities to celebrate “Take a Child Outside Week,” Sept. 24-30.

The national program is designed to encourage children and adults to spend time together outdoors. The York County partner agencies have events planned to highlight their own outdoor attractions. All outdoor programs will go on rain or shine, and appropriate outdoor clothing is recommended.

Anne Springs Close Greenway will be open 7-10 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Field Trial Barn for an evening of outdoor fun. The drop-in program includes night hikes, games and interactive outdoor festivities. Finish the night with a s’more for only $1. Free for members, $5 for nonmembers

The Museum of York County will host an outdoor celebration, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 26 featuring a live butterfly release at noon. Outdoor explorers can take part in a scavenger hunt and hike along the three-quarter mile Piedmont Trail (the trail has some steps). Free for members and age 3 and younger; $6, adults; $5, seniors; $3, ages 4-17.

The Rock Hill Outdoor Center is sponsoring a free outdoor event 9 a.m.-noon Sept. 27 at the Riverwalk trailhead. Outdoor educators will talk about trees, and participants can create leaf and bark rubbings. Walk along the scenic Catawba River to experience a Reading-With-Nature-Trail, featuring the nature-inspired children’s book “Step Gently Out,” by Helen Frost.

Attend two of the three events and become eligible for a prize drawing. Ask for details during admission for the events. Winners will be notified by Oct. 6.

Special events

▪ African Children’s Choir will perform at 7 p.m. Friday at First Calvary Baptist Church, Crawford Road, Rock Hill. The choir will sing children’s songs, traditional spirituals and gospel favorites. Free, open to the public. Love offering taken.

▪ Girl Scouts in York County are kicking off their 2015-16 season with a Keep It Local: Feed the Need in Our Community food drive to support Clover Area Assistance Center. With more than 80 troops in Tega Cay, Fort Mill, Lake Wylie and York, Girl Scouts are requesting nonperishable food donations to be dropped off at businesses through Sept. 26. Donations will be picked up and delivered Sept. 26 by the Scouts to CAAC.

▪ The AARP Local Chapter will sponsor its annual free community shred event noon-1:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at the parking lot of the Rock Hill Housing Authority, 467 S. Wilson St. Any confidential and sensitive records and paperwork can be brought for shredding. Remove file folders, envelopes and other packaging material.

▪ Friends of the York County Library will have a book sale 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 25-26 at the Fort Mill branch of the York County Library, 1818 Second Baxter Crossing. ▪ Main Street Children’s Museum resumes its OWL (Our Wee Literature) Book Club at 3 p.m. Sunday featuring “Sammy the Wonder Dachshund.” The book’s author and illustrator, Jonathan Miller, will tell the story of Sammy – a small dog of super-hero proportions who engages in adventures across the planet and beyond. Miller, a Clover High School graduate and Charleston area resident, will be available for book sales and signing. The club is free with general admission. To register, call 803-327-6400. ▪ Rock Hill Parks, Recreation & Tourism resumes its Friday Lunch Stop with live music 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Friday in the Black Street parking lot. The event runs each Friday through Oct. 30. Arsena Shroeder will perform this week, sharing soulful vocals on original songs and popular covers. Some seating available. Bring chairs or blankets.

Fundraisers

▪ The Arts Council of Chester fall fundraiser will feature the Carolina Rhythm Band, 7-10 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Chester War Memorial Building, 154 Main St., Chester. The band plays beach, Motown, classic rock and country. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

There will be heavy hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and raffle. General seating is $25 for members and $28 for nonmembers; after Sept. 29, all tickets will be $30. Reserved tables for eight are $250. Only 12 tables available. Tickets can be purchased at the Arts Council or Posh Peacock Salon. Cash or check only.

▪ Project Safe Pet will host a fundraiser 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Sept. 18-19 at Bob Evans, 520 John Ross Parkway, Rock Hill. A percentage of the proceeds will donated to Project Safe Pets. A fundraising flier must be presented at time of payment. They can be printed from Project Safe Pet Facebook page or picked up at Ebenezer Animal Hospital or Animal Supply House.

▪ Roddy Baptist Church is hosting a benefit yard sale, 7 a.m. Saturday at the church, 2678 S. Anderson Road, Catawba. Proceeds will help pay medical expenses for a woman who needs a liver transplant.

▪ The Humane Society of York County will have its sixth annual Dog Gone Good Time Festival, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 26 at Walter Elisha Park in Fort Mill. Proceeds will help with rescue at the shelter.

▪ Antioch United Methodist Church will host its annual Country Store fundraiser 8 a.m. Saturday at the church, 930 W. Rambo Road, Rock Hill. Breakfast and lunch served. Items for sale include baked goods, jams, jellies, chow-chows, other homemade gifts, seasonal decor, books by the inch and fresh flowers.

▪ The Well at Agape Church and Eden Community Development Corp. will sponsor “I Will Walk a Mile in Your Shoes,” cancer awareness benefit, 9 a.m. Sept. 26 beginning at Buffalo Wild Wings. Registration is $40. For information, go to thewellrockhill.org.

▪ The York County Woman’s Club will host “Girlfriends Just Wanna Have Fun!” an afternoon of card games, mahjong, lunch, door prizes and fashion tips from Chico’s of Rock Hill, noon-4 p.m. Nov. 12 at Grace Lutheran Church, 426 Oakland Ave., Rock Hill. ▪ Sandlappers Parrot Head Club will host a dance and party, 7 p.m.-midnight Saturday at Long Branch, 761 Riverview Road, Rock Hill, to raise money for Make-A-Wish of South Carolina. The event includes live music by the Rockaholics, silent auction and door prizes, which include a Fines Up Rouge Guitar autographed by Jimmy Buffet with certificate of authenticity; estate 14-karat gold, pearl and diamond pendant; and Cajon drum by Billy Bonham. ▪ Crime Stoppers of York County will have a pancake fundraiser, 8-10 a.m. Saturday at Fatz Cafe, 478 Herlong Ave., Rock Hill. Breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, fruit cup, drink. Cost is $7 for adults and $4 for ages 4-8. Proceeds go to Crime Stoppers.

▪ St. Anne Oratory Council of Knights of Columbus is selling the York County edition of the “Attractions Dining and Value Guide” to support its ministries. ▪ York County Genealogical & Historical Society and the Yorkville Historical Society will have a joint meeting at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24 in the Jane Spratt Room at the McCelvey Center, 212 E. Jefferson St., York.

▪ The Spencer Estates Neighborhood Association will meet 6:30 p.m. Thursday at City Operations Center, 757 S Anderson Road, Rock Hill. A representative of Rock Hill PRT will discuss the latest additions to the Riverwalk.

Health

▪ Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism and the OWLS Club (Older, Wiser, Loving Seniors) will host a Health Fair for Seniors, 10 a.m.-noon Thursday at Boyd Hill Recreation Center. The health fair is free and open to the public. Seniors groups are welcome.

▪ York County No Wrong Door presents a lunch and learn “Ending the Silence,” a discussion about mental health for parents of middle and high school students. Sessions will be 12:15 p.m. Sept. 22 at Rock Hill Flexible Learning Center, noon Sept. 23 at Clover district office, 1 p.m. Sept. 24 York Middle School Little Theater and 11:30 a.m. Sept. 25 at Fort Mill District office.
