The Arts Council of York County presents: “Then. Now. Beyond,” featuring art works by Paul Martyka, Jonathan McFadden and Sarah Nguyen at the Center for the Arts, Dalton Gallery, 121 E. Main St., Rock Hill. The show opened Friday and runs through Nov. 1. A free, public reception will be 6 p.m. Oct. 15.

Martyka, originally from Detroit, Mich., is an associate professor of Fine Arts at Winthrop University where he is the fourth recipient of Winthrop’s Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick Faculty Grant.

McFadden is an assistant professor at the University of Kentucky School of Art and Visual Studies.

Nguyen, originally from Missouri, works as an instructor at the University of Central Missouri and art editor of Pleiades Magazine.

Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday every 10 a.m.-2 p.m. the second and fourth Saturday and 2-4 p.m. the second and fourth Sunday of each month.

Special events

▪ Lando Days celebration, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 3 in Lando. The event features a classic car show, bake sale, train rides, children’s zone, live music, food, raffles and door prizes.

▪ The AARP Local Chapter will be sponsoring its annual free community shred event on noon-1:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at the parking lot of the Rock Hill Housing Authority office, 467 S. Wilson St. Any confidential and sensitive records and paperwork can be brought for shredding. Remove file folders, envelopes and other packaging material.

▪ Friends of the York County Library will have a book sale 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Fort Mill branch of the York County Library, 1818 Second Baxter Crossing. ▪ Christina Baker Kline, author of the novel “Orphan Train,” will discuss the history of orphan trains in the United States 7-9 p.m. Sept. 28 at the York County Library, East Black Street, Rock Hill. A book sale and signing will follow the program. Seating is limited and registration is required. Call 803-981-5845 or go to www.yclibrary.org, then “events and classes,” to register.

Trains, nicknamed “orphan trains” because of their passengers, were used from 1854-1929 to transport orphaned or abandoned children from the eastern cities of the United States to Midwestern farms to begin new lives.

“Orphan Train” was on five national bestseller lists, including the New York Times. Kline is also the author of novels “Bird in Hand,” “The Way Life Should Be,” “Desire Lines” and “Sweet Water.” For information on the author, go to www.christinabakerkline.com.

▪ Rock Hill Parks, Recreation & Tourism hosts its Friday Lunch Stop with live music 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the Black Street parking lot. The event runs each Friday through Oct. 30. Chris Holder performs Friday on guitar with favorites from the 60’s to today. Some seating available. Bring chairs or blankets.

Fundraisers

▪ The Arts Council of Chester fall fundraiser will feature the Carolina Rhythm Band, 7-10 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Chester War Memorial Building, 154 Main St., Chester. The band plays beach, Motown, classic rock and country. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

There will be heavy hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and raffle. General seating is $25 for members and $28 for nonmembers; after Sept. 29, all tickets will be $30. Reserved tables for eight are $250. Only 12 tables available. Tickets can be purchased at the Arts Council or Posh Peacock Salon. Cash or check only. After Sept. 29, all tickets will be $30 each.

▪ Emmanuel Church of the Nazarene will host a craft bazaar, 8 a.m.-noon Oct. 3 at the church, 998 Dunlap Roddey Road, Rock Hill. The bazaar includes more than 30 vendors, door prizes, lemonade stand and bake sale and breakfast vendor. For information, cal Jessica at 803-242-2998.

▪ The Humane Society of York County will have its sixth annual Dog Gone Good Time Festival, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Walter Elisha Park in Fort Mill. Proceeds will help with rescue at the shelter.

▪ The Well at Agape Church and Eden Community Development Corp. will sponsor “I Will Walk a Mile in Your Shoes,” cancer awareness benefit, 9 a.m. Saturday beginning at Buffalo Wild Wings. Registration is $40. For information, go to thewellrockhill.org.

▪ Lynda Randle, a Gaither homecoming artist, will be in concert 7 p.m. Nov. 5 at Rock Hill First Baptist Church. Donations will be given to the York County Christian Women’s Job Corps. Entertainment

▪ Traditional Piedmont music will be showcased during two concerts at the McCelvey Center’s Lowry Family Theater this fall. The Grand Ole McCelvey Concerts spotlight local Carolina talent who keep the region’s rich musical heritage alive.

The Hinson Girls will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday. The four sisters from Lancaster are bluegrass state champions who play old-time music with millennial appeal.

The WBT Briarhoppers return to the McCelvey stage at 7 p.m. Nov. 14. The original band members first came together in 1934 to fill the bill for WBT radio’s request for a hillbilly band to help promote its products.

▪ Carolina Community Actions Head Start has openings for ages 3-4 in Rock Hill, York, Chester and Edgemoor for the 2015-16 program year. ▪ York County No Wrong Door presents a lunch and learn “Ending the Silence,” a discussion about mental health for parents of middle and high school students. Sessions will be 12:15 p.m. Sept. 22 at Rock Hill Flexible Learning Center, noon Wednesday at Clover district office, 1 p.m. Thursday York Middle School Little Theater and 11:30 a.m. Friday at Fort Mill school district office. ▪ Symposium for Women Saturday at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Fort Mill. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. with free heart health screenings by Piedmont Medical Center and complimentary 12-lead EKG and review to qualified women by Carolina Cardiology Associates. Session speakers include Cindy Kelly of Whole Health Reset, Jimmie Sherrill of Piedmont Medical Center, and keynote speaker Dr. Scott Seibel of Catawba-Piedmont Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery. ▪ The 23rd annual Brakefield family reunion will noon Oct. 4 at Armenia United Methodist Church, 2840 Armenia Road, Chester. This reunion is for the descendants of Isaac McGriff Brakefield, John Marion Brakefield, and all other Brakefield/Breakfield kin. Bring a covered dish. Family historian Michael Scoggins will present a program on the early history of the Brakefield family. Armenia Church worship service is at 9:30 a.m.

▪ Mended Hearts Chapter 298 of Piedmont Medical Center will meet 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the CV Teleconference room of the Heart Center at Piedmont. The board meets at 5:30 p.m. Mended Hearts is for anyone who has suffered a heart event or their caregiver.
