Oktoberfest in Old Town will be 4-9 p.m. Oct. 17 in downtown Rock Hill.

The Bavarian-style festival includes a beer garden, German food, live music by a strolling accordionist, the Foothills Oompah Band, a children’s amusement area and vendors.

The fourth annual Wiener Dog Run starts at 6 p.m. and benefits the York County Humane Society. Registration is required by calling 704-287-6475. Cost is $10.

Special events

“Spirits & Stories: Brattonsville by Twilight” will be 3-9 p.m. Oct. 17 at Historic Brattonsville in McConnells. During daylight hours, the living history museum activities include apple bobbing and cider pressing, corn shelling, wagon rides and harvest demonstrations. By twilight, take on a guided lantern tour and listen to historically dressed interpreters tell the tales of those whose legends linger. Bring a flashlight and discover if spirits from the old plantation’s past still roam about. S’mores, cider and doughnuts by the campfire and live music by Night Train Owls will be between 5-9 p.m. Food concessions will be available for purchase by the Friends of Historic Brattonsville. Admission: adults, $6; seniors, $5; ages 4-17, $3; free to Culture and Heritage Museum members and children 3 and younger.

▪ The Catawba Chapter of the Daughters of the America Revolution will participate in its National Day of Service at 2 p.m. Sunday by installing half-inch PVC pipes beside the graves of 200 U.S. veterans who are buried in the cemetery at Ebenezer ARP Church on Ebenezer Road. The pipes will make it easier to place American flags at the graves on special holidays.

▪ Just Be Academy, Northwestern High School and the National Pan-Hellenic Council of Winthrop University will host Collegiate Life Boost, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Northwestern. Free for students in grades 9-12. The event features keynote speaker Anthony Davis Sr., who was drafted into the NFL by the Colts in 2005 and played in the Canadian League from 2006-2008. In addition there will be a financial aid professional who will provide information on getting money to pay for college, panel discussions among current college students and college graduates, an interactive game led by Power 98 radio personalities DJ Tab D’BIA$I the Million Dolla DJ and Ms. Jessica the Girl Next Door, lunch and a college and resource fair.

▪ A Community Singing on the Porch will be 2-5 p.m Saturday at Philadelphia United Methodist Church, 2260 Chester Highway, York, featuring The Bullock Creek Cowboy Church Band, New Home AME Zion Gospel Choir and Tim Childers. Bring a lawn chair. Food and drinks will be available.

▪ The York CROP Walk for Hunger will be 3 p.m. Oct. 18 beginning at Trinity United Methodist Church in York.

▪ The Turning Point of Chester 2015 annual banquet will be 6 p.m. Saturday at First Church of the Nazarene, 182 Pinckney St. Alfred Williams, assistant principal at Chester High School, will speak. Tickets: $20, adults; $10, age 12 and younger. Available at the Dove’s Nest or by calling 803-581-0219.

▪ The AARP Local Chapter will sponsor its annual free shred event noon-1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the parking lot of the Rock Hill Housing Authority, 467 S. Wilson St. Any confidential and sensitive records and paperwork can be brought for shredding. Remove file folders, envelopes and other packaging material.

Fundraisers

▪ Eastside Baptist Church will host a barbecue fundraiser 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, 318 N. Jones St., Rock Hill, for Ray Martin, youth pastor, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Plates are $8 and include pork, baked beans, corn on the cob, slaw, roll and dessert. To place orders, call 803-322-3843. Proceeds will help with medical expenses.

▪ Adnah United Methodist Church fall bazaar and bake sale with vendors will be 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 17 in the family life center, Adnah Church Road, Rock Hill. Breakfast and lunch will be served. A silent auction and bake sale will be held throughout the event. Proceeds go to local missions. The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas also will have a blood drive 10 a.m.-noon in the parking lot.

▪ A Charity Dog Wash will be 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday at Fuzzie Butz, 339 N. Anderson Road, Rock Hill. Proceeds to benefit the monthly York County Spay Neuter Shuttle Program, which spays and neuters 35-40 pets every month.

▪ The Carolina Traffic and Transportation Club golf outing to benefit the Lancaster Children’s Home will be Oct. 27 at the Lancaster Golf Club. Registration at 9:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 10:30. Cost is $75, which includes greens fees, cart fees, beverages on the course, dinner and a chance for the cash drawing. ▪ The York County 12th annual Claw and Paw Scholarship Tournament will be Oct. 15 at Rock Hill Country Club. The tournament is captain’s choice with a noon shotgun start. Cost is $200 for two-person team and $400, four-person team. Awards, box lunch, refreshments and snack provided. Scholarships are awarded to four York County high school students; two who attend University of South Carolina and two who attend Clemson. Hunger relief

▪ The Second Harvest Partners, sponsored by Providence Presbytery, will have a hunger relief site at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Jerusalem Baptist, 1003 Steele St., Fort Mill. Volunteers will help distribute food to recipients who meet USDA eligibility income guidelines. For information, contact Catawba Area Agency on Aging at 803-329-9670.

Volunteers

▪ Bethel United Methodist Church will open its Men’s Warming Center in November at 1232 Curtis St., Rock Hill. The center opens around Nov. 15 and closes the middle of March. Volunteers are needed to help run the center. For information, call 803-327 4881.

▪ The nonprofit Friends of the York County Animal Shelter needs volunteers to help bathe, groom, exercise, socialize, train and provide adoption information for the animals, as well as assist in follow-ups, publicity, marketing and other jobs at the shelter.
