Allison Creek Bluegrass will feature the nationally known bluegrass/gospel band The King James 1611 Boys at 7 p.m. Thursday at Allison Creek Presbyterian Church on S.C. 274 at Allison Creek Road near Lake Wylie.

Special events
▪ “Spirits & Stories: Brattonsville by Twilight” will be 3-9 p.m. Saturday at Historic Brattonsville in McConnells. During daylight hours, the living history museum activities include apple bobbing and cider pressing, corn shelling, wagon rides and harvest demonstrations. By twilight, take on a guided lantern tour and listen to historically dressed interpreters tell the tales of those whose legends linger. Bring a flashlight and discover if spirits from the old plantation’s past still roam about. S’mores, cider and doughnuts by the campfire and live music by Night Train Owls will be between 5-9 p.m. Food concessions will be available for purchase by the Friends of Historic Brattonsville. Admission: adults, $6; seniors, $5; ages 4-17, $3; free to Culture and Heritage Museum members and children 3 and younger.
▪ The Friends of the York County Library fall book sale will be Thursday-Saturday at the First ARP Church gymnasium, 201 E. White St., Rock Hill. Thousands of books for adults and children will be for sale at $2 per inch. DVDs and audiobooks also will be for sale. Opening night for Friends members will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday. Memberships will be sold at the door; $15, individuals and $25, families. The sale will be open to the public on 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. Items will be half price on Saturday. ▪ Curtin Farms will be host Curtin Farms Fest, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 24 at the farm, 407 N. Paraham Road, Clover. The event features local artisans, local foods and live music. Visitors can stroll the grounds of the 100 year-old farm to see peacocks, alpacas and other farm animals as well as view a variety of antique and modern day farm equipment. Hayrides, sawmill and alpaca fiber processing demonstrations will be offered. Admission is $5 for adults and free to children 1 and younger. Rain or shine. Free parking. ▪ “Spooky Science Saturday” will be 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Museum of York County, Mount Gallant Road, Rock Hill. Wear a not-too-scary costume and kick-off the day in a ghostly parade. Experience paranormal lighting, contorting mirrors and visit the Hall of Darkness. Solve the mystery of missing bones and uncover the truth about bats, toads, spiders and newts. Winthrop University’s Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society will help with supernatural experiments. The Settlemyre Planetarium will have a special “Scare-olina Skies” presentation at 2 p.m. featuring black holes and eclipsing binary stars. ▪ Flint Hill Adult Day Care Center will host a breast cancer awareness event, sponsored by Zeta Amicae, 7 p.m. Thursday at the center, 371 Lige St., Rock Hill. Speakers include the Rev. Rosalie Rhynes, Phillis Gaither-Montague and the Sanders family.
▪ Gallery 120 will have a meet and greet with author/illustrator Jonathan Miller, 4:30-6:15 p.m. Oct. 22 at the gallery, 120 Bethel St., Clover. Miller, a Clover native, is author of The Adventures of Sammy The Wonder Dachshund series.

▪ Oktoberfest in Old Town will be 4-9 p.m. Saturday in downtown Rock Hill. The Bavarian-style festival includes a beer garden, German food, live music by a strolling accordionist, the Foothills Oompah Band, a children’s amusement area and vendors. The fourth annual Wiener Dog Run starts at 6 p.m. and benefits the York County Humane Society. Registration is required by calling 704-287-6475. Cost is $10. Admission to the festival is free. Fundraisers
▪ The United Methodist Women of Bethel United Methodist Church will have a Homemade Holiday Pie Sale. Orders for sweet potato, pumpkin, coconut custard, apple, chocolate nut, buttermilk, pecan, and peanut butter pies are due by Nov. 13 by calling 803-324-2455 or 803-324-4344. ▪ York County Flyers will have a Fallen Eagle fly-in benefit for Hospice and Community Care, 9 a.m.-until Satuday, 240 Langrum Branch Road, York. Cost is $10 and includes ticket for a Spektrum DX-7 radio with AR8000 receiver. There will be more than 40 raffle prizes. Lunch by Chef JJ. ▪ Adnah United Methodist Church fall bazaar and bake sale with vendors will be 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday in the family life center, Adnah Church Road, Rock Hill. Breakfast and lunch will be served. A silent auction and bake sale will be held throughout the event. Proceeds go to local missions. The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas also will have a blood drive 10 a.m.-noon in the parking lot.

▪ Western York CROP Walk will be 3 p.m. Sunday beginning at Trinity United Methodist Church in York. The CROP Walk in Rock Hill will be Nov. 1 beginning on Dinkins Lawn. Both walks have raised more than $700,000 in 37 years with more than $175,000 going to local food banks.

Volunteers
▪ Salvation Army is looking for volunteer bell ringers this coming Christmas season. Kettle operations run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Shifts are two house per day. Kettles will begin Nov. 13 and end Dec. 24. For information or to sign up go to ringtoday.us.
