Movie night at the Sylvia Theater Monday in York

York Parks and Recreation will host Movie Night at the Sylvia, Monday at the Sylvia Theater in downtown York. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. and “The Flight Before Christmas” begins at 6:48 p.m. The event is free and limited to 200. Children ages 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. ▪ Fort Mill VFW will have live entertainment Ron Morrow 9 p.m.-1 a.m. Saturday at 1442 Harris Road. Morrow plays beach music, blues and ’60s rock and roll. Open to the public. For information, call 803-547-5480.

▪ Author Jeryl Christmas, a native of Rock Hill and graduate of Winthrop University, will have a book signing, 3-5 p.m. Saturday at Grumpy Brothers Grill and Bakery to sign copies of her latest book, “Haley’s Voice.” Haley, who was diagnosed with hypotonic cerebral palsy and left unable to speak, has a remarkable story which is told by her mother.

▪ The 2016 Heart Gala, sponsored by the Heart 2 Heart Foundation, will be Feb. 6 at the City Club of Rock Hill, East Main Street. The event includes a VIP receptions with open bar, Hero with Heart Awards, food, photo booth, raffle and live auction. Tickets are $50 until Dec. 31. ▪ Community Outreach, sponsored by Boyd Hill Baptist and Liberty Hill AME Zion churches, will be 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday at Boyd Hill fellowship hall, 315 Glenn St., Rock Hill. The event features a free holiday dinner and toy, food and clothing giveaway.

Fundraisers

▪ The Joe Davis Memorial Resolution Run will be Jan. 9 in Fort Mill. The 10K starts at 8 a.m. and 5K at 8:05 a.m. The event is sponsored by Keystone Substance Abuse Services. To sign up go to keystoneyork.org.

▪ Gregory’s Marine and RV is accepting unwrapped new or gently used toys at 3021 Mount Gallant Road, Rock Hill. The toys will be given to needy families in the area. The shop also is offering free toy assembly and storage to the public. All stored toys must be picked up by 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Entertainment

▪ The York County Ballet presents “The Nutcracker,” 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 3 p.m. Dec. Friday and Saturday at Johnson Hall Theater at Winthrop University. Tickets are $15 and available at the Winthrop Bookstore and yorkcountyballet.org.

The following event will be offered at the York County Library, Black Street, Rock Hill:

▪ Family Game Night, 6:30-7 p.m. Dec. 30 for a night of board, Wii, and Kinect games, plus a colossal deck of cards and Mega Twister. All ages, accompanied by adult. Call 803-981-5888 to register, starting Wednesday.

▪ York County Library branches will collect Food for Fines through Dec. 31. Library users can pay off fines for overdue materials with nonperishable food and personal hygiene items. ▪ York County library branches will be closed Dec. 24-Dec. 27 for Christmas and libraries will close at 6 p.m. on Dec 31 and remain closed on Jan. 1 for New Year’s Day.

Volunteers

▪ The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program needs volunteers to help low-income, seniors and handicapped taxpayers prepare income tax returns. Volunteers will be trained by the Internal Revenue Service, N.C. and S.C. departments of revenue to prepare basic tax returns. Training is free and is offered to volunteers who are willing to learn to prepare 1040A, 1040EZ, and the basic 1040 forms with schedule A and B. Training will include filing on computers. Training will be 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Jan. 11-15 at Rock Hill City Hall in the wellness center on the first floor. Volunteers can choose hours and days they wish to work. ▪ The nonprofit Friends of the York County Animal Shelter needs volunteers to help bathe, groom, exercise, socialize, train and provide adoption information for the animals, as well as assist in follow-ups, publicity, marketing and other jobs at the shelter.
