Brattonsville celebrates Hog Butchering Day Saturday

The traditional family affair of processing and preserving a whole hog will be 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday during Hog Butchering Day at Historic Brattonsville in McConnells. Historically dressed interpreters will present a sundry of pork-processing activities throughout the day, including rendering lard and making soap, as well as butchering, preservation, and cooking demonstrations. Visitors can watch how chitterlings and sausages and bacon are made. Food from Gardeners BBQ of York County will be available for purchase. Admission: $6, adult; $5, senior, $3, ages 4-17 and free for children 3 and younger and Culture and Heritage Museum members.

▪ The Rock Hill alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will host an Affordable Care Act educational seminar, 12:30 p.m. Jan. 16 at New Mt. ▪ Registration is open for the 11th annual Joy of Gardening Symposium, Feb. 27 at Baxter Hood Center, Rock Hill. The keynote speaker is Norman Winter, director of the University of Georgia’s Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens in Savannah, Ga. He also will lead one of six break-out sessions, covering topics ranging from attracting pollinators to succulent gardens. Paula Gross, assistant director of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Botanical Gardens, will give the closing program. Admission to the symposium, sponsored by the Master Gardeners of York County, includes lunch, vendors offering a variety of garden-related products and door prizes. Clubs

▪ The Ballroom Dance Club will meet 7:30 p.m. Jan. 15 at the Oak Room at Fort Mill Golf Course, 101 Country Club Drive. Guest admission is $15 per couple, $7.50, singles and includes a free dance lesson. Dances also include swing and shag. No alcohol; light refreshments provided. Dressy casual. Bob Doster’s Backstreet Studio in Lancaster will hold metal sculpture workshops, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Jan. 30, March 5, and April 30 at 217 E. Gay St. Participants can make a bottle tree, sculpture, or metal ornaments and will design, draw, cut, polish, and weld under the instruction of Doster. Cost is $100 with supplies included. School enrollment

▪ York School District One’s Hunter Street Elementary School Montessori Program will have open enrollment orientation, 6:30 p.m. Jan. 19 in the cafeteria. The program offers a half-day program for children who will be 3 by Sept. 1 and a full day program for children who will be 4 by Sept.1. Proper documentation includes a state birth certificate, not a hospital copy; updated immunization form; proof of residency (most recent copy of property taxes, power bill, water bill will all be accepted. A driver's license will not be accepted) and a valid picture ID of the parent or legal guardian.

Volunteers

▪ The nonprofit Friends of the York County Animal Shelter needs volunteers to help bathe, groom, exercise, socialize, train and provide adoption information for the animals, as well as assist in follow-ups, publicity, marketing and other jobs at the shelter.
