Rock Hill Music Club hosts hymn festival

The Rock Hill Music Club will host “A Festival of Hymns” at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour, 144 Caldwell St., Rock Hill.

The Hymn Festival features the choirs of the Church of Our Saviour, Oakland Avenue Presbyterian, Doby’s Bridge Presbyterian with Donald Moe as narrator, Virginia Moe on organ, Timothy Moe on trombone and Richard Hart on trumpet. LaVerne Vinegar is coordinator.

Special events

▪ The Museum of York County will host its annual “Come Draw with Me” family day 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. Museum visitors can join professional and student artists in sketching and rendering drawings taken from the museum’s collection of natural history specimens. Professional artists will demonstrate a variety of visual art techniques. Children can draw with chalk and crayons or try sculpting with clay in the museum classroom. Visitors can bring their own sketch book and materials or create their own sketch books out of recycled materials as a classroom activity. The event is free with museum admission. ▪ North Central Family Medical Center will have an enrollment drive for the Affordable Care Act, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Jan. 23 at 1131 Saluda St., Rock Hill. No appointment is necessary. Open Enrollment ends Jan. 31.

▪ The Rock Hill alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will host an Affordable Care Act educational seminar, 12:30 p.m. Saturday at New Mount Olivet AME Zion Church, 527 Dave Lyle Blvd., Rock Hill. Fundraisers

▪ Bethel United Methodist Church soup kitchen is open 11 a.m. Thursdays through March at the church, 1232 Curtis St., Rock Hill. Open to the community. Donations accepted.

Clubs

▪ Rock Hill Area Shag Club party will be 8 p.m. Saturday at Celebrations at Ramada Inn, Cherry Road. Board meeting at 7 p.m. Wear a favorite team jersey. Hot dog dinner with all the trimmings. Members bring a dessert. Admission: $3, members; $5, guests.

▪ The Ballroom Dance Club will meet 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Oak Room at Fort Mill Golf Course, 101 Country Club Drive. Admission is $15 per couple, $7.50, singles and includes a free dance lesson. Teen Advisory Board Meeting, 4:30-6 p.m. Monday for ages 11-17. Help select materials for the library’s young adult collection and plan events for teens, while earning volunteer time. No registration required.

Fiction Frenzy, 4:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday for ages 9-11. Participate in group activities and hear about 5-star chapter books from Miss Amy and other kids. No registration required.

Tech Help Drop-In, 1-4 p.m. Friday for those who need help with laptops, tables or have questions about email, Internet safety, social media or software or which library products will work with an e-reader. Bring your own computer or device or library staff members will demonstrate using library-owned equipment on a first-come basis.

4-H

▪  An information meeting and registration for Junior Scientist Club, sponsored by Chester County 4-H, will be 5:30-7 p.m. Monday at the Market Building, 116 Columbia St. The club is for students, third-sixth grades and meets twice a month January-May. ▪ Registration for Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism’s Spring Youth Sports is Monday through Feb. 5. The following are offered, including two new programs:

Soccer for ages 5-13 as of March 31

Baseball for ages 9-13 as of April 30

Girls softball for ages 10-12 as of April 30

New baseball instructional clinics for age 14 and older as of April 30.

New girls softball instructional league for ages 7-9 as of April 30.

Cost is $42 for all programs.

School enrollment

▪ York School District One’s Hunter Street Elementary School Montessori Program will have open enrollment orientation, 6:30 p.m. Jan. 19 in the cafeteria. The program offers a half-day program for children who will be 3 by Sept. 1 and a full day program for children who will be 4 by Sept.1. Documents needed for registration include state birth certificate, immunization records, proof of residency (most recent copy of property taxes, power bill, water bill will all be accepted. A driver’s license will not be accepted) and a valid picture ID of the parent or legal guardian.

Volunteers

▪ The York County Council on Aging needs volunteers to help deliver meals to home-bound seniors in Rock Hill. For information, contact Nikki McIsaac at 803-328-0197, ext. 302.

▪ Hospice & Community Care will offer a volunteer training session for those interested in volunteering in the Hospice & Community Care Resale Shop in downtown Lancaster. Training will be 2-4:30 p.m. Jan. 26 in the community room at the Lancaster County Library. 313 S. White St. Volunteers help with receiving, sorting, and pricing donated items, as well as helping customers find great deals. Flexible volunteer hours and schedules are available. ▪ The nonprofit Friends of the York County Animal Shelter needs volunteers to bathe, groom, exercise, socialize, train and provide adoption information for the animals, as well as assist in follow-ups, publicity, marketing and other jobs at the shelter. ▪ Volunteer training for the Cass Elias McCarter Guardian ad Litem Program begins Jan. 25-Feb. 27. Training involves three hours of online classes each week and a Saturday class on the case study.
