Shepherd’s Center’s Adventures in Learning begins Monday in Rock Hill
Shepherd’s Center of Rock Hill winter session of Adventures in Learning begins Monday at Oakland Baptist Church, 1067 Oakland Ave. The program, in its 30th year, is for adults age 50 and older to learn new skills and socialize. Coffee and assembly is at 9 a.m.
The program runs Mondays through Feb. 29. Classes include creative writing, line dancing, current events, beginner bridge, physical fitness, games and a session on government. ▪ Registration is open for the 11th annual Joy of Gardening Symposium, Feb. 27 at Baxter Hood Center, Rock Hill. The keynote speaker is Norman Winter, director of the University of Georgia’s Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens in Savannah, Ga. He also will lead one of six break-out sessions, covering topics ranging from attracting pollinators to succulent gardens. Paula Gross, assistant director of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Botanical Gardens, will give the closing program. Admission to the symposium, sponsored by the Master Gardeners of York County, includes lunch, vendors offering a variety of garden-related products and door prizes. ▪ The Arts Council of Chester County’s 10th Annual Oyster Roast & Auction Fundraiser will 6-9 p.m. March 19 at the National Guard Armory, 1025 Armory Road. The event features a silent and live auction, all-you-can-eat steamed oyster bar and Lowcountry boil buffet, slaw, bread, dessert, and sweet tea. Cash bar (beer and wine). ▪ The Fort Mill Band will have its second annual pancake breakfast, 8-11 a.m. Saturday at Philadelphia United Methodist Church, S.C. 160 West. Menu: pancakes, bacon, fruit, coffee and juice. Tax help
▪ AARP will have free federal and state income tax preparation Tuesday and Thursdays, Feb. 2-April 14 at the Fort Mill Library in Baxter Village. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. with the last client taken at 3:30 p.m. The service is primarily first come but a limited number of appointments are available. There is no limit on age or income. ▪ Taxaide will offer free tax preparation 12:30-3:30 p.m. Feb. 3-March 31 and April 13-14 in the adult education area at the Flexible Learning Center, 1234 Flint St. Ext., Rock Hill. ▪ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance will offer free tax preparation, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 1:30-4:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesday and Thursday beginning Monday through April 14. Volunteers
▪ The nonprofit Friends of the York County Animal Shelter needs volunteers to bathe, groom, exercise, socialize, train and provide adoption information for the animals, as well as assist in follow-ups, publicity, marketing and other jobs at the shelter.
