The 2016 Glencairn BloomFest is seeking vendors for the May 21 event at Glencairn Garden in Rock Hill.

The event includes garden-themed vendors, music, food, garden tours and a plant sale. Kids’ activities celebrating National Kids to Parks Day are also featured.

Vendors interested in selling garden-related items (plants, garden art and accessories, artwork, pottery) can get an application at cityofrockhill.com/bloomfest.

▪ The Rock Hill Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will host a Community Health Day, “Mental Health Across the Lifespan,” 10 a.m.-noon March 19 at the Emmett Scott Center, 801 Crawford Road. The program will include resources and tools to help maintain sound mental health. Speakers from various local agencies will present. Open to the public. ▪ The Chester County Sheriff’s Ball Daddy-Daughter Dance for ages kindergarten-eighth grade will be 7-10 p.m. March 11 at Gateway Conference Center, Richburg. Tickets are $30 per couple and $5 for each additional child. No tickets at the door. Cost includes photo, refreshments and prizes. Fundraisers

▪ Mario’s Pizza and Italian Restaurant will host a spirit night to benefit Rock Hill Community Theatre, 4-9 p.m. Monday. Tell the server you are supporting the theater and 20 percent of the receipt will be donated to the theater.

▪ A Relay for Life fundraiser will be held at Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant in Rock Hill, 4-9 p.m. Monday. The restaurant will donate 10 percent of the proceeds to Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. Relay for Life/York East will be 2-10 p.m. May 14 at Dutchman Creek Middle School, Rock Hill.

▪ Charlotte Avenue YMCA annual Campaign Raffle runs through March 15 at the YMCA, 402 Charlotte Ave., Rock Hill. Prizes include a six-month YMCA membership, a week at Camp Cherokee, $500 gift certificate to Thomas & Leitner Orthodontics, $50 Outback Steakhouse gift card, gift cards to other local businesses and more. ▪ A “Farewell Salute to Downton Abbey,” a fundraiser for Historic Rock Hill inspired by the PBS program, will be 6-9 p.m. Saturday at the City Club of Rock Hill, 140 E. Main St. The event will include cocktails, wine, champagne, and heavy hors d’oeuvres, period music, prizes, silent auction and other 1920s-era forms of entertainment. Vintage dress is encouraged; black tie is optional. Tickets are $75, members; $80, non members. Each ticket includes two complimentary drink tickets with cash bar thereafter. ▪ “Be Irish for a Night,” the 22nd annual fundraiser for Pilgrims’ Inn, will be 6:30-9:30 p.m. March 12 at Saint Anne Parish Life Center, 1696 Bird St., Rock Hill. The event features a corned beef and cabbage dinner, homemade Irish corn bread and desserts, wine, beer, soft drinks, Irish dancers and music, and live and silent auctions. ▪ The Arts Council of Chester County’s 10th Annual Oyster Roast & Auction Fundraiser will be 6-9 p.m. March 19 at the National Guard Armory, 1025 Armory Road. Only 40 tickets are still available. The event features a silent and live auction, all-you-can-eat steamed oyster bar and Lowcountry boil buffet, slaw, bread, dessert, and sweet tea. Cash bar (beer and wine). ▪ Fort Mill Community Playhouse presents “The Honky Tonk Angels,” a musical revue at its new location, 220 Main St. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, March 11-12 and 17-19 with matinees at 3 p.m. March 6, 13, 20. Tickets are $16, adults; $13, students and available at Tega Cay Pharmacy and Crossing on Main.

▪ Franc D’Ambrosio will present “The Phantom Unmasked,” 8 p.m. Tuesday at Clover School District Auditorium, S.C. 55 East. D’Ambrosio is know for his role as the Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera.” His show unmasks the Phantom and take the audience on a journey from the Bronx to Broadway. Rolling in Rock Hill

▪ Rock Hill Neighborhood Empowerment Office is accepting nominations from low to moderate income, elderly residents and individuals with disabilities for the 2016 Rolling In Rock Hill Paint Project Sept. 17. Homes must be owner-occupied and located in the city limits. Homeowner must be in the low-to-moderate income bracket, an elderly resident or physically unable to paint your own home.

Heating assistance

▪ The York County office of Carolina Community Actions, 546 S. Cherry Road, Rock Hill is accepting applications to assist income eligible families with heating bills and other programs and services. Eligible families can receive assistance with their home heating bills up to $1,000 through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. Additional services include HVAC unit repairs or replacement. The General Emergency Assistance Program provides assistance with water bills, rent or mortgage assistance. Funding for self-sufficiency programs provides tuition for educational certificates, job training,employment, medicines and child care assistance. For information, call 803-366-5537.

Clubs

▪ York County Flyers, a remote control model aircraft club, will have an Indoor Micro Fly-in, 5:30-10 p.m. Tuesday March 8 at Shield of Faith Church family life center. ▪ Lake Wylie Shag Club’s offers shag-dance lessons and line-dance lessons for $1 Tuesdays at the Fort Mill Moose Lodge. Line-dance lessons begin at 6 p.m. and shag-dance lessons at 7:30 p.m. The dance floor opens for all dancers at 8 p.m. The event features a DJ and snack bar.

▪ The Newcomers Club of York County, a women’s social and civic minded organization, will meet 11:30 a.m. March 9 at The Pope John Center at The Oratory, 434 Charlotte Ave., Rock Hill. Auditions

▪ Rock Hill Community Theatre will hold auditions for “Bull in a China Shop,” 3-5 p.m. Sunday and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the theatre, 546 S. Cherry Road, Suite N (behind The ROC). Actors will read from the script. Details at rockhilltheatre.org.

Classes

▪ Fewell Park Recreation Center is offering the “My Rainbow” watercolor class for children ages 8-11 years old, 3:45-5:45 p.m. Mondays March 21-May 2 at the center. Recreation

▪ The Junior Team Tennis program begins 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the Rock Hill Tennis Center. Pre-registration is required for the program which introduces kids ages 6- 18 to the game. Beginners and intermediate level players will work with volunteer coaches in this six week program. The cost is $50.78, which includes registration, a league fee and a small gift. A USTA (United States Tennis Association) junior membership is also required, but free for new players age 10 and younger. To register or for information, call 803-326-3842.

Scholarship

▪ Applications are being taken for the York County Democratic Women’s Council third annual Bessie Moody Lawrence Scholarship. The award will be given to two college-bound York County Democratic women graduating this spring. For information or an application packet, contact your high school counselor or call 803-802-7021. Grants

▪ Deadline to apply for small grants through the Arts Council of York County is 5 p.m. Tuesday. The Small Grants Program provides support for small or pilot arts activities, artist professional development, new and developing programs or organizations, and special projects of high artistic quality that cannot support themselves. Organizations and individual artists may request up to $1,000 per grant and may receive up to two grants in a calendar year. Tax help

▪ AARP will have free federal and state income tax preparation Tuesday and Thursdays through April 14 at the Fort Mill Library in Baxter Village. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. with the last client taken at 3:30 p.m. The service is primarily first come but a limited number of appointments are available. There is no limit on age or income. Bring all tax documents and last year’s returns. For information, email FortMillTaxes@gmail.com.

▪ Taxaide will offer free tax preparation 12:30-3:30 p.m. through March 31 and April 13-14 in the adult education area at the Flexible Learning Center, 1234 Flint St. Ext., Rock Hill. Additional hours will be 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Feb. 23, March 8 and 22 and April 5 at the Charlotte Avenue YMCA, Rock Hill. Bring tax documents and last year’s returns.

▪ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance will offer free tax preparation, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 1:30-4:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through April 14 in the wellness center at Rock Hill City Hall. Saturday service will be offered Saturdays in February from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Rock Hill Galleria, Leroy Springs Recreation Complex in Fort Mill and the Clover library. Bring tax documents and last year’s returns.

Support groups

▪ Affirmation of York County is a faith-based support group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, their families and friends.
