Earth Day Birthday is a free family event featuring activities, games, live entertainment and more than thirty educational exhibits, each with a hands-on environmental message, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the Museum of York County, 4621 Mount Gallant Road, Rock Hill.
The City of Rock Hill and York County Solid Waste Collection and Recycling are selling compost bins for $50 (must pay in cash, exact change only at the event). These high-quality Earth Machine bins normally cost $109. Bins can be purchased and picked up during the Earth Day Birthday event at Mt Gallant Elementary, across the street from the Museum. Bins can be pre-ordered at yorkcountycompostsale.eventbrite.com.
Food will be available for sale from the Museum Guild, or bring a picnic. Pony rides will be available for a fee and also for a small fee, volunteers will be helping participants tie-dye t-shirts.
Family Trust Credit Union will have a shredding truck available for household papers 9 a.m.-noon at Mount Gallant Elementary School across the road from the Museum.
Special events
▪ The Rock Hill Music Club will host its 15th annual Musical Tour of Homes, 2:30-5:30 p.m. May 1. Tour sites include the replica of the Greek Parthenon home of Dr. and Mrs. Earnest Archer, the historic home of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Roddey and the restored former Andrew Jackson Ballroom in the Guardian Fidelity building. Tickets are $15 and available at each location, from club members or at the Arts Council of York County. Proceeds go to local music scholarships, awards to Winthrop University, York County high schools and musical organizations.
▪ Girls on the Run of the Tri County SC will host its end of the season Girls on the Run 5K, 8 a.m. Saturday in downtown Rock Hill. The run is noncompetitive and provides girls with a goal to work toward. The cost to participate is $25 before Thursday and $30 at packet pickup and race day, and includes the event fee, event shirt, and medal. ▪ In recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, York County Child Advocacy Network is hosting the annual Child Abuse Awareness Ceremony and Candlelight Vigil, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Museum of York County, 4621 Mount Gallant Road, Rock Hill. The museum 5-t6:30 p.m. Admission is free for museum members and all children accompanied by a paid adult. ▪ The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in York is sponsoring a garden tour, art and plant sale and lunch May 7. Six yards in the York area are on the tour. ▪ Clover Leaf Foundations presents Taste of the Town, 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday at Clover High School. The event includes menu items from a variety of local restaurants. ▪ The Winthrop University Eagle Club will host its 25th annual Eagle Club Scholarship Auction May 14 at the Winthrop Coliseum. The silent auction begins at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and a live auction at 8 p.m. Over the past 24 years, the Eagle Club has raised more than a million dollars for scholarships for Winthrop students. ▪ The Arts Council of York Council is hosting a Prohibition Party May 21 at the Courtroom at the Gettys Art Center, 201 E. Main St., Rock Hill. ▪ The York School District is looking for children with disabilities who need services and who are not currently enrolled in a York public school program. The district provides programs for children ages 3-21 with the following disabilities:preschool children with disabilities, mental disabilities, specific learning disability, emotional disability, speech or language impairment, hearing impairment, autism, orthopedic impairment, other health impairment, vision impairment, traumatic brain injury, and children with multiple disabilities. Workshop
The U.S. Department of Agriculture will host workshops to to explain assistance programs available to residents with USDA investments in conservation, house, community facitilies, businesses and infrastruction. For Chester and surrounding counties, the workshops will be 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Chester County Government Complex, 1476 J.A. Cochran Bypass.
Camps
▪ The annual Chester County Sheriff’s Camp will be July 11-29 for students ages1-14. Hours are 8 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays. Conducted in military style fashion, the camp is designed to promote good citizenship. The camp includes physical training, swilling, first aid skills and journaling. Registration is $50. ▪ The Arts Council of York County is currently accepting nominations for the Ben Ardrey Volunteer Award and the Business and the Arts Partnership Award. The winner swill be honored at the Arts Council's Annual Celebration on June 30 at the Gettys Art Center, 201 E. Main St., Rock Hill. Both established in 1992, The Ardrey award recognizes individuals who have committed themselves to arts and culture during the past year. The business award recognizes businesses which have demonstrated a dedicated partnership with the arts. Nomination forms are available at the Arts Council of York County and are due by 5 p.m. May 20. ▪ The African American Cultural Advisory Committee has been awarded a $1794.30 grant by the Arts Council of York County.The grants will by used to complete the construction of the African American Business District Monument.
