Special events

▪ The Wesley United Methodist Church Women will host the annual May Extravaganza at 6 p.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church, 22 E. Liberty S., York. Tickets, $10, adults; $5, age 6-10. Fellowship, entertainment, fun, and food.

▪ The Well will host a community flag football game with youth vs. adults May 14 at Saluda Trail Middle School. There will be inflatables and food truck vendors. Bring a lawn chair. Sign up by calling the church 803-329-0222.

▪ Clover Farmers Market is seeking local farmers and artisans to participate in this summer’s farmers market. For information, contact Barbara Denny at bdenny@cloversc.org.

▪ The eighth annual Hog on the Hill will be Friday-Saturday in downtown Chester. There will be an anything but barbecue event Friday and a barbecue and pie contest Saturday. The event includes a outdoor theater, kids play area, and kids meals. Entry forms are available at Anna’s Arbor. For information, call 803-385-4803.

▪ A community reception for winners of the Arts Council of Chester County 21st annual Superintendent’s Art Show will be 4-5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Ann D. Marion Gallery, 123 Main St. The artwork will be on display through May 20.

Fundraisers

▪ The Society of St. Vincent de Paul will have its annual yard sale, 7 a.m.-noon Saturday at St. Anne Catholic Church, 1694 Bird St., Rock Hill. Proceeds benefit the needy in the Rock Hill area. Rain or shine.

▪ The Winthrop University Eagle Club will host its 25th annual Eagle Club Scholarship Auction May 14 at the Winthrop Coliseum. The silent auction begins at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and a live auction at 8 p.m. Over the past 24 years, the Eagle Club has raised more than a million dollars for scholarships for Winthrop students. ▪ The Arts Council of York Council is hosting a Prohibition Party May 21 at the Courtroom at the Gettys Art Center, 201 E. Main St., Rock Hill. Partygoers will sample the finest bourbon, scotch, wine, and moonshine at the Roaring 20s style party. Dress to impress. Tickets are $37 for members and $42 for nonmembers through May 12 and $55 for everyone after. Tickets available by calling 803-328-2787 or at the Center for the Arts, 121 E. Main St.

▪ Affinity Health Center’s 13th Annual Dazzle and Denim fundraising event will be 7-11 p.m. May 13 at the Magnolia Room at Laurel Creek in Rock Hill. Tickets are $60, single; $100, couples, through May 6. After that, tickets will be $65 per person. Entertainment

▪ Allison Creek Bluegrass will host Cottonwood, 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Allison Creek Presbyterian Church, S.C. 274 at Allison Creek Road, York. Doors open at 6 p.m., and food service with hot dogs, hamburgers and desserts begins at 6:30. Free admission.

▪ Summer in the Park concert series opens May 10 at Fewell Park, 1204 Alexander Road, in Rock Hill featuring acoustic jazz and rhythm and blues by Amy Coccia and Jason Poore. The free concert is at 6:30 p.m. This concert series will be on the second Tuesday of each month through August. Bring a picnic and blanket or lawn chair. ▪ Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism will host a free Family Movie Night May 14 featuring “Minions” (rated PG) on a large screen outdoors at Cherry Park soccer field No. 5. Meetings

▪ Bethel Rural Fire Tax District Board will meet 7 p.m. Wednesday at Station No. 1.

▪ The York County Genealogical and Historical Society will have its annual meeting at 2:30 p.m. May 15 at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 2445 S.C. 557, Clover. New board members will be elected and the scholarship recipient will be named. The program includes a brief history of the church and Bob Inman, author of Liberty Mountain, will speak. Open to the public.

Clubs

▪ The Newcomers Club of York County, a women’s social and civic minded organization, will meet 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 11 at Park Point Village, 3025 Chesbrough Blvd., Rock Hill. Officers will be elected and checks given to the two year-end charities Hospice & Community Care and the Humane Society of York County. Lunch is $12 all-inclusive. Workshop

▪ The U.S. Department of Agriculture will host workshops to to explain assistance programs available to residents with USDA investments in conservation, house, community facilities, businesses and infrastructure. For Chester and surrounding counties, the workshops will be 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. May 18 at the Chester County Government Complex, 1476 J.A. Cochran Bypass.

York County Library

▪ All York County libraries will be closed Friday for staff training. Normal operating hours will resume May 7. For information on library programs and services, go to www.yclibrary.org.

▪ Terry Cobb, manager of the Clover library, received the Public Library Employee Excellence Award for 2016 from the Friends of South Carolina Libraries.

Red Cross

▪ May is Trauma Awareness Month and the American Red Cross urges eligible donors to give blood or platelets to ensure blood products are available for trauma patients and others with serious medical needs. The Red Cross provides blood to approximately 2,600 hospitals nationwide, including about 100 throughout the Carolinas Blood Services Region. Donors of all blood types are currently needed. Schedule appointments by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, at redcrossblood.org or call 800-733-2767.

Classes

▪ Line dancing taught by Julia Robbins will be 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, May 9, 16 and 23 at St John’s United Methodist Church, 321 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill. Written dance steps will be provided. All ages and skill levels are welcome. Cost is $20 with proceeds going to the church youth. Come early the first night to register. ▪ Lake Wylie Shag Club offers shag-dance lessons and line-dance lessons for $1 Tuesdays at the Fort Mill Moose Lodge. Line-dance lessons begin 6 p.m. and shag-dance lessons 7:30 p.m. The dance floor opens for all dancers 8 p.m. The event features a DJ and snack bar.

Recreation

▪ Registration for free swim lessons begins Monday. The lessons are taught by trained swim instructors and offered by the Rock Hill Parks, Recreation & Tourism Department (PRT). Sessions for ages 4-adult begin June 6 and will run every two weeks through August. Times and skill levels vary per site. Swim lessons are held at the four city pools, which open June 4. Registration is taken in person, on a first come basis during business hours at Room 390 at City Hall, Boyd Hill Center, Emmett Scott Center, Fewell Park Center and Northside Center. Scholarships

▪ Applications are available for the York County Farm Bureau scholarship program for students pursuing agricultural or related field degrees. Applications are due June 27. For information, contact Sandra Robbins at 803-684-4235.

▪ Bailey Ellison, 19, of Rock Hill received the $1,000 Eddie Reeves Volunteer Leadership Award and scholarship at Family Trust Federal Credit Union’s recent annual meeting. Ellison, a sophomore nursing student at Queens University in Charlotte, co-founded an anti-bullying club, served tornado victims in Joplin, Mo., and raised money for families of victims at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The daughter of Robin and Jim Ellison, she volunteered five years with Operation CARE, which rescues animals. Scholarship finalists receiving $500 were Hannah Jackson of Rock Hill and Bonnie Wyatt of Clover.

Volunteers

▪ The York County Council on Aging is in need of volunteers to deliver meals from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. to homebound senior citizens in the Rock Hill area. For information, call 803-328-0197, ext. 302.
