York County and Chester County are set to honor troops killed in action in wars at events Sunday and Monday over Memorial Day weekend.
▪ The annual York County Memorial Day weekend ceremony begins at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Lakeview Memory Gardens, 1774 U.S. 321, York. The cemetery is where the monument with all the names of York County troops killed in action in wars is located. In all, 212 troops from York County were killed in action from World War I through the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The event is coordinated by the York County Veterans Advisory Board. The program includes speakers and honors Gold Star Mothers whose children were killed in action. Special speaker is Dr. Perry Hopkins of Clover, a decorated combat pilot who was shot down four times in wartime.
Music will be provided by the Filbert Strings, Bobby Plair Sr. and Jr., and others.
The event is free and open to the public and the veterans board encourages any veteran or person who supports the military to attend.
▪ Chester County’s annual Memorial Day ceremony is 11 a.m. Monday in front of the Chester County War Memorial building, 154 Main St. Chester. The event will include Chester High School JROTC, wreaths for each war’s monument, and speakers.
▪ Historic Brattonsville will be open to the public to honor all United States veterans on Memorial Day. The celebration, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, includes historical interpreters presenting 18th-century cooking and domestic arts demonstrations.
Games will be played on the lawn, picnic baskets are welcome, and the 800-acre plantation with interpretive battlefield trail will be open for exploration.
As a participant in the Blue Star Museum program, the site offers free admission May 30-Sept. 5 for all active duty, National Guard and Reserve military personnel and their families. General admission: adults, $8; seniors, $7; ages 4-17, $5; free for CHM members and ages 3 and younger. All other Culture and Heritage Museum sites are closed May 30. ▪ Master’s Car Club 14th annual car show will be Saturday at Burns Chevrolet Cadillac, 2515 Cherry Road, Rock Hill. ▪ Clover High School Spring Fling and Beach Bash will be 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at the school. The event features local vendors, live entertainment, carnival games, inflatables, cornhole and a canjam tournament. Food truck vendors include Spoon’s Barbecue, Vito’s Pizza, Two Chicks and a Truck, Smax Flatbread Grill and Pelican’s Snoballs. Free admission. Rain location will be in the gym. ▪ The Museum of York County will offer “Dinosaur Revolution Maze,” an interactive learning experience within a maze setting, a variety of dinosaur-themed activities and educational programs will be featured throughout the natural history museum from June 11-Sept. 10. The museum also will present a selection of fossils, models and graphics highlighting dinosaurs that once roamed the Carolina Piedmont region. The museum’s dinosaur-themed itinerary features special planetarium shows and the museum’s new meteorite collection, which features a special loan from the Smithsonian Institution of a meteorite that fell near Spartanburg in 1933. On July 13, John Sinclair, curator of Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute’s Meteorite and Minerals Museum, will share his presentation “When the Meteors Came Down,” along with his personal collection of meteorites gathered from around the globe. “Dinosaur Family Day,” an opening event, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. June 11, will feature special activities, crafts, a dinosaur costume parade and a traveling science center with live reptiles. Meteorite expert John Fendley will be on-site for a show-and-tell of his personal meteorite collection. Food will be available for purchase.

▪ The McCelvey Center’s Lowry Family Theater will host two Grand Ole McCelvey concerts featuring local string-ensemble Cottonwood and the Grammy-award winning Peasall Sisters. Specializing in traditional Carolina Piedmont bluegrass music, Cottonwood will perform 7-9 p.m. June 11. The five-piece string ensemble includes Dan Hinson on guitar, Don Jones on mandolin, Zach Lemhouse on fiddle, Mark Mears on banjo, and Tony Helms on bass. Tickets are $10 each. The Grammy and Country Music Association award-winning Peasall Sisters return to the Grand Ole McCelvey 7-9 p.m. July 8. The Peasall Sisters have performed at the Grand Ole Opry, Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall. Tickets are $15 each. Tickets are available online and at the door. ▪ Allison Creek Bluegrass will host Cottonwood of York at 7 p.m. Thursday at Allison Creek Presbyterian Church. Doors open at 6 p.m., and food service begins at 6:30. ▪ The Anne Springs Close Greenway summer concert series begins its fourth year with a concert featuring Southern Experience, 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Comporium Amphitheater. Recreation
▪ Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism is offering a two-stage adventure race 9 a.m. June 11 along the Catawba River with registration currently underway. The Pump House River Run consists of a 3 mile paddle from Riverwalk to River Park, followed by a 5K run on the Piedmont Medical Center Trail. Kayaks and paddle boards can be used for the paddle portion of the event. Youth and adult divisions are offered, and participants can compete solo or as a two-person relay team. The event begins at the kayak launch in Riverwalk on Herron’s Ferry Road at 7 a.m. with packet pick-up, equipment drop-off.
