County seeks input for future planning
If residents missed their chance to comment on York County land-use planning, they won’t have to wait long for another.
County development services manager Eddie Moore held public meetings Feb. 23-March 9 in Rock Hill, Lake Wylie and Fort Mill. Those meetings came from a County Council directive in the fall to look at zoning and development rules, spurred by Lake Wylie residents’ concerns on residential development near the lake.
“This is an extension of the issues discussed,” said Diane Dil, county planner.
A new set of public meetings are planned for later this month as the county updates its comprehensive plan.
“It’s very important that we hear from our citizens and businesses – their thoughts, ideas and suggestions,” said Stephen Allen, county planning services manager. “The comprehensive plan is the county’s road map to creating the future.”
A community open house March 10 at the Baxter Hood Center precedes meetings March 19 in Lake Wylie, March 25 in Fort Mill and March 26 in York. Residents also may participate at yorkforward.com.
“This is a much larger project that looks at where and how the county will grow and develop over the next 20 years,” Dil said.
The effort includes an advisory committee of residents. Each Council district added two participants, and the county planning commission added one more.
“Development is inevitable, but we need to plan for it,” said Michael Kazak of Tega Cay, who represents District 1 and works in regional planning. “People are coming here regardless, but in 25 or 30 years, what’s going to make them stay?”
The advisory group aims to find solutions where residents, developers and other interests meet on common ground.
“It could really cater to all interests,” Kazak said.
