Clover club plans card party

The Clover Woman’s Club will hold a card party 2-5 p.m. March 20 at Clover School District Office, 604 Bethel St.

Tickets will be sold by members and reservations. Cost is $10 with money going to the scholarship fund. Refreshments will be served.

Lions name winners of poster contest

Local winners of the Peace, Love and Understanding 2014 Lions International Peace Poster Contest were Lydia Sutton of Oakridge Middle School and Faith Marie McCarn of Clover Middle.

The contest, sponsored by the River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions provides the opportunity for Lions at the local level to involve 11- to 13-year-olds to focus on global peace. The posters are forwarded for regional judging. The international grand prize winner, together with their parents, receives a trip to the Lions Day award ceremony with the United Nations and a $5,000 prize.

Both students were guided by their visual arts teachers Olivia Chinnes at OMS and Sara Bena at Clover Middle.

In discussing her projects, Sutton said, “Peace is something you earn by loving others, not yourself.”

Referring to her poster, McCarn said, “The people in the picture stand for understanding and love. The background stands for peace.”

Each winner received a $50 gift card and a certificate of achievement.

Group to meet at Carroll School

The York County Genealogical & Historical Society will meet at 3 p.m. March 25 at Carroll School, 4789 Mobley Store Road, Rock Hill.

The Carroll School is one of many Rosenwald Schools built for African-American students across the rural South in the early 20th century. It was used from 1929-1954. In recent years, it has been preserved by Rock Hill School District 3. Queenie Hall will talk about the Rosenwald School program and the life of the Carroll School.

Gladys Robinson will talk about the efforts to preserve the Liberty Hill Rosenwald School near Catawba.

Swine show, sale March 28

The 4-H/FFA Swine Project Show and Sale will be March 28 at the Chester Livestock Exchange, 2531 Lancaster Highway.

4-H and FFA members will show the hogs they’ve raised three months. Awards will be presented for Grand and Reserve Champions and Average Daily Gain winners.

The show will begin at 10 a.m. and the sale should begin at noon.

This is a United Way of York County sponsored project. The Bank of York sponsors the Grand and Reserve Champion Prizes, and the York County Farm Bureau awards special prizes to participants.

Art guild showcasing Clover artist’s works

The Gaston County Art Guild presents a retrospective of Clover resident C.M. Kakassy’s original printmaking, “Looking Back,” March 4-April 8 at Arts on Main, Citizens National Bank building, 212 W. Main St.

Originally working in sculpture, Kakassy’s eye for form and space led her to painting, photography, hand-made papers and original printmaking. She has spent years working in printmaking media – intaglio, serigraphy, relief and lithography.

5K to benefit pediatric brain tumor foundation

The Bethelfields subdivision in Lake Wylie will host the St. Paddy’s Powder Run 5K on March 14 to benefit the Gavin Slade Jones Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.

Walking group meeting in Clover

The Clover Daybreak Walkers meet at 6:30 a.m. each Tuesday and Saturday in the Blue Eagle Academy parking lot on Knox Street.

This walking club, which will meet weather permitting, is for beginners, but everyone is welcome to come exercise and meet new people.

Registration is not necessary. Just show up with your walking shoes, comfortable clothing, water and sun protection. A walk leader will plan and lead each day’s walk.

The Daybreak Walkers is a project of Live Well Clover, the town’s active living committee, organized to grow a healthy and active Clover community one step at a time.

Lions selling directory ads

River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Club is selling ad space in the phone directory that reaches more than 3,000 Lake Wylie area residents and businesses. Proceeds go to local charities, including River Hills/Lake Wylie EMS.

The directory is available online and includes phone numbers for government services and officials. It also lists charities, churches, hospitals, utilities, schools, newspapers, River Hills social and services organizations, and children’s activities. One copy of this directory is delivered free-of-charge to all River Hills residents and to directory advertisers each year.

Fun run, walk planned for Relay for Life

The second annual Hippity Hoppity Hope 5K fun run and walk will be Saturday, April 11 at First Baptist Church, 102 S. Congress St., York.

The event is a benefit for the church’s Relay for Life team, which is raising money for the annual American Cancer Society benefit.

A children’s race will begin at 7:50 a.m. and the 5K race will be at 8 a.m. Cost is $20 for the 5K only. Proceeds benefit the cancer society.

Sweet Repeat seeks donations

Sweet Repeat Charitable Foundation seeks donations, especially furniture, for its thrift store at 4082 Charlotte Highway.

The store does not accept mattresses, computer items or televisions (unless flat screens). Donations are tax deductible.

Donations may be dropped off at the shed behind the plaza building 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Store hours are 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. To make a donation outside the regular hours, call 803-831-1298. To call the store, 803-831-0722.
